I was shooting last night with a pretty good wind at my back and it seemed like I was shooting 2-3 inches higher than normal at 30 yards. Does this sound right or did I change something? I could see maybe an inch but 2-3 just seemed like a lot for the wind to change my shot. I was shooting good groups just higher than normal.
Headwind and tailwind shouldn't effect your shot much at all unless you are unable to hold steady on your target because of it. I find that it's more accurate to shoot from a kneeling position in the wind because your body presents a smaller profile to be buffeted around which allows me to hold on target more steadily. From my experience that's the bigger issue than wind drift on the arrow shaft. Then again, I shoot some pretty heavy arrows. The more arrow weight and higher FOC you have the less wind drift you're going to see.
2-3" at 30y? No question it could be that much depending on the weight of your arrow. I assume you are shooting FP's? Lighter arrows will get pushed around more. What does your arrow weight and what is your FOC %?
I've never had a tail or head wind affect my shot that much at 30 yards, but high cross winds will definitely move an arrow. It all depends on just how strong the wind is Ask Slippy! LOL!! Dan
"How much does wind affect your shot?" I don't take to far a shot no matter what wind is going on, I also use a heavy arrow so I'm not to worried about it!
I am shooting FP's. I have no idea what my arrow weight is, still kinda new at this. Please pardon my ignorance but I don't know what FOC stands for. I should probably mention that I am shooting a compound at around 65lbs.
the wind definantly has a facter, not that we like to take shots at game when it is too windy, but it is good to practice with slight wind to see how you hold up against it. No matter what you always have to see how you will hold up to natures elements while drawing back and taking a shot by a different postion, sitting, kneeling and so forth. I missed a nice 8 pt. a few years back 140 class deer, I was in a situation where I was drawn for about 3 minutes, 30mph wind gust, tree shaking. I would have had him but I clipped this little branch that was dangling down. so like I said practice in different scenarios!
FOC stands for Front of Center. You can read about it here: http://www.backcountrybowhunting.com/articles/foc.php I assume you have shot darts before? Ever use bar darts? They are light and have no weight on the front. Then you pick up some nice darts that you buy at the hobby store. Notice how the darts weigh more and a lot of the weight is towards the front? That is a high front of center %. It's the same theory with arrows.
I got ya. Thank you for the link! I will have to do some measuring and post it up. I will also have to bring one of my arrows in to work and weigh it, we have a very nice/accurate scale for measuring rivets/nuts & bolts.
