    Hey All,
How many sight pins is your bow set up for (when hunting)?

I'm a newbie, and had a ten, twenty, and for practice, a thirty yd pin.
while training with some experienced hunters, they tell me that they only use one sight pin...

How many do you all use for your hunting setup?

20, 30 and 40. Use what you feel comfortable with and what works for you.

I have 5 pins but only because the sight I really wanted came with 5. Three would be plenty adequate for what I do as I would not shoot over 30 yards. So I have my pins set at 20-25-30-35-40. The 35 and 40 yard pins are for follow up shots or for fun. It seems to work pretty good.

    4 pins

    20-30-40-50

However, since you are just starting out, you should get comfortable shooting at close ranges first.

    So,
will your 20 yd pins also work for shots under 20yds?
if so, do you have to compensate for where you are holding the pin?

To answer your question, I pretty much hold dead on with my 20 for anything under (except some real tricky shots that I won't even confuse you with :D)...

And don't take this the wrong way at all (that I'm being a smart-arse) but you really ought to shoot your 20-yard pin at different distances (five, 10, etc) to see how it works for YOU.

THAT'S when you'll have confidence in your setup -- because you've done it yourself.

This...although my 50 and 60 are for the yard, not deer.

    I ain't worried about the smart-arse thing... I asked...
I have only had a few shots using my 20 yd pin at closer distances, and it was late in the day... it seemed to work, but I need to go back to the range for more shooting.

I have been shooting at targets for the past four years, but am only learning about hunting, and am just learning to shoot from elevation.

Love this forum, thanks for all your replies!

    To answer your original question...

    NOW, it's 20, 30, 40 and 50.

For YEARS when I first got started, it was 20, 30 and 40. Plenty for someone just getting started -- and the 40 was only for yard practice, not use in the woods.

Set your pins for as long as you have pins for and practice shots from those long distances. Not only is it good practice (for form). It's great practice, in case you ever need to take a follow-up shot.

20, 30, 40, 50, 60 for me. For your "experienced" friends that use one pin, are they using an adjustable sight or just one pin and compensating?
