Okay I was just out shooting a little with my new Spot Hogg Seven deadly pins. What the heck do I need 7 pins for? I usually only really use 4 pins tops. One at 20,30,40 and maybe one at 50 but they are close together. SO my question is what do you have yours set for and how many? This is for Hunting only. I am confident out to 60 but have never even thought of taking a shot that far at a animal. 40 is the farthest I have dropped a animal and that was only once. Should I take a few of these off so it's not so cluttered? Skip the 30 pin and hold high with the 20? I could get use to anything. Advice please.
5 pins 10-20-30-40-50 I have the Copper John sight it had 6 pins I removed one. I'm also still shooting a 2005 Allegiance at around 280 FPS so yes there is enough difference to set these pins this way.
5 pins 20-30-40-50-60. I take the bottom pin off for Hunter Class 3-D. Thats a Spot-Hogg Hogg-It and 4 pins leaves a pretty clear site picture.
i shoot 3 pins 15-30 and 40 yards - i use the "hold high & low" tecnique. My 1st pin "15" is my got to pin everyhting i feel comfortable shooting at animal wise is always usually 10 - 25 yards. All ive gotta figure is whether its over or under one of thos yardages and hold 4-5 inches either way. Ive thought about just using one , anyone do this ?
For deer hunting I only use two pins, 15yds and 25yds. My sight usually has from 4 to 5 pins because I like to do most of my practicing over 30yds, usually at 45 or 50. Other bows that I hunt varmints with I will use all of the pins at all of the ranges, out to 60yds.
You know I set 20,30,40,50 but hunting whitetails in the last 34 years I have only used 20, 30. And I bet I have shot most of my deer under 20 yards. The last two have been 12 yards and 15 yards. Hunting out west I have used all my pins. So I guess it is what you are hunting were you are hunting.
For hunting I use three pins set at 20, 30, and 40. I don't really think there is much of a need to have more than this when hunting in the midwest. As most people have already stated, the average shot distance is under 30 yards and IMHO, any shot over 40 yards is getting into the grey unethical area. My 3D pin sight is 4 pins, set at 22, 28, 33, and 38. Kind of a crazy setup, but there is some logic to the maddness.
20, 30, 40, 50, and the 50 pin floats to 59, 67, 75 (G5 sight) I'm looking forward to having a custom Viper Microtune made. I want as many pins as possible on that one. The top pin will be .029, the next will be .019, and the rest will be .010. Can't wait....maybe have it for this season (but probably not)!
That is the idea. I have set up a bunch of 3D courses in my life. I do not range or walk the distances when setting a target, but you can be pretty sure the number of targets that fall right on at 20,30, or 40 is pretty few. Plus in the ASA Bowhunter class, 40 yards is your max target distance and I am not going to aim at an ASA 12 ring at 40 yards. So on a 40 yard taget, I aim for a center 10 with my 38 yard pin and hope to fall into the 12 ring. Some days this works, some days you write down a bunch of 8's
20-30-40 Never shot a deer with anything other then my 20 pin.........likely never will. The 30 and 40 are for fun in the yard and keeping me ultra confident at 20.
When I go elk hunting, I have 25,35,45 & 55. For deer I keep those same pins just read just the 1st 2 to 20ish & 30ish. I've never shot a deer with anything beyond my first pin.
