How many US Senators does it take to make a stupid demand? Evidently the answer is 50. Today 50 democratic senators sent a letter to the NFL strongly urging that they change the name of the Washington Redskins. A lot of the supporters of this move say it is because the name is racist, demeaning and derogatory against Native Americans. They go on to say we have to be compassionate about the plight of the Native Americans. In 2004 a survey of persons who identify themselves as Native Americans showed that 90% were not bothered by the name. However, in 2014 a symposium at Washington College of Law determined that the previous survey should be ignored because it is "outdated". If 90% are not bothered by the name, in fact some said it honors the virtues of the Native Americans, is it a racist, demeaning and derogatory name? If 90% of the alleged victims are okay with the name, is there a plight? Does the legislative branch of the US Government have any legitimate business in this issue (or non-issue)? Does this issue or non-issue warrant the attention of legislative representatives over all of the other issues in America right now?
With the way our country is spiraling out of control, one would think they would have plenty of other things that they could be working on.
Next it will be the Kansas City Cheifs or the Chicago Blackhawks. Let's fry a bigger fish. How about the state of Oklahoma. The Choctaw Native American meaning is "red people". When will this political bs end? Cheese and rice.
In the letter from the Senators it says that the Navajo Nation Council representing the largest tribe in the nation opposed the Redskins name. ESPN has a story on this saying the council voted 9-2 to find the name offensive in professional sports but the vote does not apply to college or high school sports and the mascot for one of the high school's on the Navajo Nation is "the Redskin." Is there an odor in the air on this, because something stinks.
I don't think the gov should be getting involved in this. There are much more important things they could be doing.
What are they supposed to change it to, the Washington native americans? Some jackhole would take offense to that to. This political correct BS gets old.
the government is really trying to get it's fingers involved in all aspects of our lives lately, it seems. Does this smack of socialism ??
I'm part native american and I am not offended by anything except the utter stupidity of DC and the nation in general.
Clearly the Washington Redskins owner is nothing but a racist, the NFL should handle it the American way and force him to sell the team so they can rename it.
Racially/ethnically speaking, there is no such thing as a "Native American". Human beings did not evolve as a species on this continent, they migrated here...just some did so prior to others. Anyone, of any race, creed, or ethnicity, who was born on this continent is a "native" American. What is generically and politically (in)correctly referred to as the "Native American race" is very genetically diverse and not one "race" at all- to say otherwise is actually insulting to the ethnic diversity of those descended from the paleo-Americans, which is really a much more accurate descriptive term. Sounds like 50 senators need to stop worrying about a sports nickname that offends less than 1/100th of the people they are elected to govern and start worrying about the growing majority of registered voters who are sick of this disgusting dog and pony show masquerading as a legislative body.
I always felt the name was a tip of the hat to native Americans. I would think they'd love the name. What a candy azz country this is becoming.
Native Americans probably want "Washington" removed from the team's name. Makes them look like a bunch of crooks and liars.
If the native Americans don't care then whats the problem? Practically anything you do now offends someone.
The key part of my assertion was "as a species." Paleo-Americans are not a separate species from homo sapien, last I checked.
You started off saying racially and ethnically...since the thread is on the subject of the Redskins name being racially politically incorrect...that pretty much sets the scope of the subject to race/ethnicity. Racially and ethnically...what we know as "native americans" did evolve on this continent but I digress...I agreed with everything else you stated. There are many "native americans" that don't like the term "native american" and prefer the term "Indian" and vise versa. I guess we'll also have to go after the Indians and the Braves now too. What about the Cardinals? How many song birds will be offended by that one?
