Just curious - what is the most number of arrows you have ever needed on a given day (shot, follow up shots, broken arrows, etc)...or maybe better way to ask, for any 1 day of your hunting career, what is the fewest number of arrows you could have carried and still tagged your animal? For me it's 2 (once had a followup shot while tracking, twice I've needed a second on a spinal)...all other hunts were one arrow jobs. Makes me wonder why I had a 9 arrow bolt on quiver on the old Hoyt back in the day. As I prepare for upcoming Elk hunt - it just got me thinking what are odds I really need 6 arrows with me...
For my recent elk hunt, I TOOK a dozen simply because I've got a hard travel case that holds that many. I also like to have a couple with field points on them, as well as a couple with practice broadheads (formerly sharp ones that I've shot exclusively into a BH target). The rest are outfitted with razor-sharp, ready-to-go heads. But... I only CARRIED five with me: same as on any whitetail hunt. That was plenty.
Carried 4 and have used them all. Two does a yote and missed a turkey out in a field. Never had that much action since. One of these days maybe.
Carry 4, used three once. Fall turkey...don't ask Only had one follow up shot on a deer before, and that was after a spine hit.
Carried 6, used all six and shot a few over again...yaks are tough. Matt, it's better to have them than not...be prepared.
I've had a few situations in the past where I need more arrows than I care to admit. But these days I carry 4-5 arrows, depending on which quiver I have and don't expect to use more than 2 in a day.
The first year I hunted I was 12. I had 2 does come in and pose like statues at about 25 yards. I flung 6 arrows at them. Missed low everytime, they just stood there looking around while I'm in the tree, arrowless. I believe I invented a few new cuss words that morning while the deer proceeded to eat acorns around my stand for the next 30 minutes.
I spined a deer once years ago and shot it 3 more times while it flopped around on the ground so 4 is the most I've used. There's been several occasions that I've been able to put 2 shots in a deer and I never pass up the opportunity for a follow up. Now days I carry 4 broadheads and a flu-flu in my 5 arrow quiver but I pack a full dozen on long trips to leave the spares in camp. You never know when you're going to fall and break every arrow in your quiver or have the airline gorillas bend half of your aluminum arrows getting your gear where you're going.
I have a four arrow quiver - have shot all 4 and climbed down and back up the tree - took 3 does that afternoon and shot one twice
carry 4....ive shot 3 at the same deer before.. missed low then missed high then actually hit her....very interesting event!
I carry 5 now. In '05 I only had 3 arrows with me for a hunt. Upon reaching my stand I nocked an arrow, only to realize the nock was busted. I was down to 2 arrows. It's a long story, but I had to end up climbing down to retrieve an arrow for a follow up shot.
I just put four arrows in my quiver right before I came on here which consisted of 3 BH's and 1 Judo small game head.
