Funny you mention the chewing thing, my grandpa used to chew beechnut. One year we had early snow during rifle, and he was spitting in it at the base of his stand and had two little fawns come up and start eating the snow where he was spitting. Snow cone anyone?

few years ago I had a set up a post with hemlock boughs pushed down inthe snow for cover...deer went up to it to eat the boughs...nosed around inthe snow hit a patch of my snus spit and I could see by the tracks that deer scrambled - almost fell - getting the heck out of dodge!

You know I don't understand these things either...I too follow the book by the letter, or at least give a 110% effort in my attempt to, but I know so many guys that either chew, smoke, eat etc in their stands and come home with big old booners! One guy I know got a 170 buck while standing in his stand smoking a cigarette and peeing into a mountain dew bottle. He put the cig in his mouth, the bottle on the seat and shot it with his bow. I don't get it, I'm doing everything "right" or at least from what I read and was taught and I see them at 40-50 yards in brush that I cannot get a shot at...WTF?!?!

Did said event happen during the rut? Let's not kid ourselves guys, anyone, AND I MEAN ANYONE...if placed in the right location (sheer luck at times) during the rut can, will and some have taken monster bucks!!! Purely because bucks get stupid at this time! Not all bucks but most definitely some do for sure! Following the book seperates good hunters from lucky hunters in that we successful see bucks yearly, perhaps even harvest them pretty commonly and we do it not just during the rut.
