Alright I found a great spot, its up on a ridge meadow its a little knoll with some oaks that are loaded, There is a bedding area on the back side and the deer filter out of the bedding area right past this knoll. The problem is there are not suitable trees except one and I can only get about 12 feet off the ground. Is this high enough? How low have you guys hunted and successfully harvested deer??
The wife has killed a load of dear out of a 10 ' stand, we just make sure she has good cover and background.
I took my best buck -- he went 167 1/8 -- from a stand that was about 10 feet off the ground... but I had some great background cover.
To me it almost sounds good that you have a low stand in this situation. If you are seated too high you may get skylined by the deer as they come over or around the side of the knoll. They may even see as you climb the tree if you do not get low enough. If you have a stand at 12 feet and the deer come creeping off the side of that knoll, it may be a great ambush spot if you stay low because they will not see you until it is too late. If you stay too high they could come right off the side of the knoll and be looking at you at almost no elevation difference compared to their elevation.
I never thought about it like that. I will be low enough to where they cant see me getting into the tree. And I am going to hang the stand this evening. Thanks!!
I believe you will be just fine stating low. Its all about the cover you have around you to mesh in with.
