Ok, the side conversation in the other thread is getting the better of me, and for fear of completely derailing the other thread, I'll start this one. Per grade, how many days a year are your kids (or were you) in school? We're talking secondary only here. In PA, it's 180 days and 990 hours for secondary schools. We start usually the last week of August and run through the first or second week of June. One large break for Christmas, and a smaller break for Thanksgiving and Easter. Curious to see what these part-time schools in the country are doing to get done in the middle of May (yes I'm jealous):D
High School started on 9/3 and the seniors get out today 5/23. Days they get off: 10/17 & 10/18 11/1 11/7 11/8 11/28 & 11/29 12/23-1/1 1/20 2/17 3/13 & 3/14 3/28 4/18 & 4/21
Both our girls started school the day after Labor Day. Our senior's last day is June 5th and our 2nd grader's last day is June 12. They had so many days off I can't even count...at least that is how it seemed. I never remember having that much time off.
My kids started the last week of August and today was the official last day. This year they lengthened the school day after several snow days and had to go to school on a couple of scheduled holidays to "make-up" time. Next year they start on August 18th and go to May 22.
I'm the same as you in NC Matt. I know of a few school systems in Georgia that start the first week in August and got out around May 15th. I'll add that a few years back we got waivers from the state and were able to start in the first or second week in August, and got out middle to late May. It was great as I'm already doing football full time starting August 1st anyway. The coast of NC (tourism) put a stop to that and now all of NC is on the same schedule because they claim August is such a big tourist time for them. (This part was in the what I hate about my state thread)
I looked it up and here is the state requirements for local school boards in Georgia. (i) Any grade K – 3 shall have not less than a daily average of 4 ½ hours (270 minutes) of instructional time based on the 180-day school year. (ii) Any grade 4 – 5 shall have not less than a daily average of 5 hours (300 minutes) of instructional time based on the 180-day school year. (iii) Any grade 6 - 12 shall have not less than a daily average of 5 ½ hours (330 minutes) of instructional time based on the 180-day school year.
When I was in high school our official year was from around 9/8 to 6/26. We usually got the middle 2 weeks off in June for tests we called regents and came back the last week to just mess around with each other. Every student had their own schedule so people got out at different times. One year i got out at 12:45 each day.
When I was in high school we started after Labor Day and ended before Memorial Day from what I remember
