HOw important is it to constantly have moisture in a mineral lick? There hasn't been much rain here and I was thinking about going to refresh it sometime next week. Will the deer try to lick the dry dirt or only if it's moist? If i were a deer there's no way I would lick dry dirt if I had the option of licking wet dirt.:confused:

From all of the natural and man made mineral licks I have seen, they have to be moist to be used. I had a couple Trophy Rocks out up here in Canada and would pour water on them every other day during dry times to keep deer using them.

without any trail cameras set up, i can't say for sure what deer do. however it seemed to me that when it was moist was the time they hit it the most. after the season, i moved some stands and didn't refresh 2 of the sites i used the liquid stuff. when the following season came around, the 2 spots i moved away from had become big pits. this was 9-10 months later. so it's possible that they only would hit the lick after rain saturated the area, but i have no proof. they could have been hitting it when it was dry, but i don't see a down side to refreshing it. good luck

I always had the best luck with wet mineral licks. Im going to be setting up a few new ones here pretty soon, in low lying areas.
