I like to sit between two big limbs if at all possible. I really like the 20-22 foot range and have all my pull up ropes cut for that height. They are tied to my stand so as I climb, I know when the rope gets tight, I am at 20 feet. Loc-Ons and removable steps.
^This plus (Concealment is more important than height... make sure you aren't skylined.) I would rather be lower with background cover than high and against an open sky.
When I first started hunting with golden rectangle and his dad, almost all the stands were in the 15-16 foot range. We have since had a minimum of 20 feet with one going 24. All good advice, lower with good cover, higher without it.
Schultzy is spot on. I'll sit as low as 12' and have been as high as 30'+. Depends on the tree, surrounding trees/brush, and the topography.
simply solved with some homemade straps and some branches you take up or cut up in the tree. I've had great luck just being high...unless terrain is sloped deer just don't naturally look up that high.
Last night sat at 15' a couple spots the surrounding branches are so slow there is no point in going over 10'.
That works... I take gallon ziplocs to gather Spanish Moss which I use for cover. It helps hide stands too and doesn't dry out and get noisy like leaves do..
I go 12-17' on most days. Every now and then I space out while climbing and get up too high. (25' or so) I shoot deer up close and personal so getting up above 20' tends to make for bad shot angles.
Bleep you Tony! Yeah... it's like that. ...sigh... LOL. I knew it was going to be one of those mornings when I tripped... twice... walking across the parking lot.
