How high do you get when you are in your stand? As in how many feet do you think you should be up in the tree? Fooled ya! Most ladder stands seem to be in the 15-17 feet range. I have one that is 22 ft. A fiend of mine will take a climber to oxygen level. I have seen him do some stupid things, but 30ft and asleep in a climber. My brain out weighs and over rules my balls. How high do you go?
It depends on the conditions. The type of tree/bark make a difference in how comfortable I feel with the grip. I like to get about 30' when possible.
Depends on a lot of factors, terrain, cover, etc, etc. I have stands between 10' and 36'. I've killed bucks out of climbers at 30'+ and out of a 10' ladder. I prefer to be around 25'. I'm not worried about shot angle, at that height, any odor stream will be above deer, theoretically, and you can get away with a fair amount more movement than being at 18'. Again, all depends on conditions for each stand. Every stand site is its own animal. As far as falling asleep in stand goes, some of the best sleep I ever get is while perched high in a tree, in my comfy climber or ladder stand. I try not to doze off unless I'm in a "full capture" type stand, and, always have my safety harness on.
I'm a 20ft guy most times, though I've been as low as 10 ft when that's all I could get. I haven't hunted woods/trees that allow much higher than 20ft... I only use a climber
Most of my setups are about 18-22' up. I have gone higher or lower when the situation dictated, but that is where I usually end up.
As low as I can get away with. Your scent "could be" traveling above the deer you're hunting's heads. Or, it could be dropping directly to the ground (thermals will dictate). Play the wind as best you can......and choose your setups, wisely.
This is common sense answer but it all depends on the time of year (leaves vs. no leaves), type of terrain (hilly or flat), type of tree (pine tree with little cover vs. cottonwood or oak with tons of cover). I've got one stand that produced 3 deer for me this year and it's only 10' - 12' off the ground. No deer busted me out of that stand this year. Most generally though, I like to be 20' plus. Highest I've ever killed a deer from was 32' because the deer funneled downhill towards me so I didn't have much choice but go high. One thing I consider is that shot angles and aiming points become tricky when you get that high.
I hunt primarily flat lands. That being said, I usually hunt anywhere between 15 - 24 feet. I do not like the sharp shooting angles that hunting high up offer, plus my confidence diminishes greatly when I afraid to stand up because of my heights issues! If I could have the same sighting results hunting on the ground, I would definitely do that, but I simply see way more deer and get closer when I am in a tree stand. Sal
I'm right there with ya, not a huge fan of heights but i relax once i get my safety harness on. It seems like sometimes when i need to go high in a tree i can climb and never look down, climb high as i feel comfortable then climb a little higher and still stop at the same height.
I've found myself continually climbing and setting stands higher over the past decade. I like my feet at about 20 to up to 25 feet. then again a lot of my set ups are on steep mountainsides where I am 30 feet up on one side of the tree and only 15 on the other at 1st pin yardage..
I go to whatever height that I can get the best cover for that spot/tree. If there is not good cover for that particular spot/tree then I generally like to get to 20 or more feet.I have been as low as 12 feet.
like others have said, it depends on the situation for me, but usually i'll be right around 20', + or - a little.
Depends on what's around me. Most of the time I end up in the 15'-20' range. Sometimes lower, sometimes higher.
lowest i have ever been was about 9 feet to the platform of my climber. highest was prob 19 or 20 feet. the time i was at 9 feet is when i got my deer, my cousin came to my tree and said what the hell is the point of a tree stand when your that low i told him to go look at the dead buck on the ground haha. i think it depends on your situation on how high you go.
