I've been putting out tree stands with 20ft sticks which means the platform is about 17'-18' high, does this seem high enough? I think I'd like to be about 25ft up. I'm new and not to sure how scent free or how still I''m sitting.

Personally I like to be 20-25 feet off the ground, but that's just my personal preference. In my opinion, the most important factor is making sure that you've got cover/concealment. If you have that at your height of 17-18 feet then you will be good to go. I've had to go as high as 31 feet to get concealed, and I've done it as low as 10 feet. The last thing you want is to be a big blob on a bare tree trunk with no tree limbs around to break up your outline.

For me, a few different factors come into play. The biggest being available cover. I have killed deer out of a stand 8' off the ground, 25', and everything in between.

I am usually somewhere around 20', give or take. I climb until I get to the big v in an oak usually.

As high as they need to be in order to get a good shot and not be detected by the deer. There is no set height for tree stands. For me, it's usually between 17-23 feet. I've been as low as 8 feet and as high as 32 feet.

I don't ever use a fixed stand, only my climber. I like to have the freedom of switching locations/trees on a whim. My tow rope is set at 20' and I usually stop when it gets taught. Finding cover is definitely important and doing prep work like cutting shooting lanes helps you stay hidden with open shots.

Thanks for all the responses. I don't own a climbers but I have a LW hang-on w/sticks, 3 ladder stands and 3 other hang-on's at two different properties. We have some really thick barked pine tree's down here and they really make a racket with a climber or even just leaning against them in a hang-on. I'm really trying to get my scent higher as well as keep myself concealed when the wind is just swirling.

I just stretch as high as I can when I have my hang on and 4 sticks. Other than that, my stands are usually around 18-22 feet. One stand is 35 feet to the bottom of the tree, but it is kind of in a creek drainage deal, with the stand only like 20 feet above where the deer walk by.

One area is 50 acres with most of it so thick you can't even walk through it and the other area 450 acres of new growth pines and a 1/2 dozen hammock ares.
Each area has it's learning curves.

20 foot ladder sticks, but I usually hug the last 5 feet with my arms, putting the platform (Loc-On) right at 19/20 feet.. Head height is about 26 feet...

I'd say 15-20 feet on average. Sometimes higher, sometimes lower.

Two hang ons around 20' to the platform. One two man ladder 15' to the platform. Single lader 17' to the platform. each of the three of us that will be hunting my property this year also have climbers. I make sure they have enough back cover whether it be limbs in the tree the stand is on or other trees right up next to it. I also let the distance to the trail dictate my height some. 15yd or less, I don't like to be higher than 20'. I have one stand that is between two trails that is 15' high in heavy cover. The trails are around 20yd from the stand but, I have heavy cover and two shooting lanes cut to each of them.

My stands are between 18 and 24' depending on the tree, terrain, and back cover.

Here in the South, the deer have a "look up" gene built in. If I'm in the climber I'm usually 25-30 feet up. I'm in hanging a lock on its usually in a knarly tree that won't let me get up that high. The stand I hung yesterday was probably 22' but its in some thick, nasty stuff so by the time the deer see me it will be too late!

Now in the Midwest, the deer are not nearly as "smart" or "hunter savy" so I normally don't have to get quite as high when I'm at the farm in Illinois.
