I've found 435ish grain arrows are ideal for me. I can still get some speed without cranking my bow up too much. I'm fortunate to have long arms though. j870, just curious, what bow are you shooting and what's your DL/DW?
704 grains as of right now. It will be less this next hunting season. Looking to get In that 650 grain area.
566 grains on the current arrows I shoot at everything from grouse to moose at 71# but I'm booking tickets to OZ for Sept. so I think I'll be adding another 100 - 200 grains and maybe ordering some 80# limbs for water buff!
Anybody can shoot a Longbow or Recurve, you just have to want to do it, then just do it! DW's differ, it all depends on what you want to pull! I have bows from 52 - 45, they will kill anything in North America! I shoot a heavy arrow for better penetration and a quieter bow, in all reality my bow are whisper quiet! I always say, what would you rather get hit by a Mack Truck of or Hyundai? I love seeing my arrow in flight and when it drops right in the pocket it sure is special! Most bows DW's are measured with a 28" DL, 2-3# is the usual difference with more or less Draw length. The longer you pull past 28" the more DW, the shorter you pull past 28" the less DW your pulling...Hence the 48# @ 28". I hope this make sense brother!
Thanks for the info BHF, I might play around with those wood arrows this summer to see if I can make a connection with them.
I just ordered my new FMJ 250 Dangerous Game shafts. The new arrows should weigh 960 grains with the 315 grain Ashby heads I'm thinking of putting on them. With the 80 lb limbs I just ordered driving them... is there anything that will stop these things? Any guesses as to what the FOC will be with 415 grains up front and feathers in the back?!
Thanks for the information. I am very interested in traditional archery. What are the differences in long bows and recurves? It seems more people shoot recurves or I see more of them in shops. I would assume that the recurves have quicker limb response, does that even make sense? I know nothing about these bows. I am going to pull the trigger on one as soon as I figure out which type I want. I would like to keep price around $500 to start. I want a good bow and as nice looking as I can get for that. Then arrows and yep, I know absolutely nothing about them either. All I know is I want to give it a try and I want to start out with good equipment when I do. Am I in the ball park on price for the bow? I saw a guy shooting a long bow and I was amazed with his accuracy. I have had the itch ever since. Another thing that came to mind....and someone asked....what kind of gun do you guys carry when bear hunting with a bow? I have bear hunted with a rifle and one was chambered in 375 and the other in 416. The 375 was for small ones the 416 was for all the rest.
Rob - post a pic when they're done...I'd like to see these badboys! You could probably just drop one of these on a whitetail and get penetration
There are many things that go into making a perfect hunting arrow and IMHO weight is only one thing to consider. I prefer something around 6 grains per pound bow weight and like my speed to be around 280fps to 310fps. Of course adequate FOC (12% or more), components installed correctly, spine correct, and tuned to laser flight are all important Dan
