The title arts it all.I'm just curious to see how far away you guys park and walk in. My only vehicle right now is a commercial cam and on board I had some chemicals so I was thinking that the smell could be flushing out the deer. Any advice.? Sent from my ALCATEL ONE TOUCH 4037T using Tapatalk
I live on my hunting property....so I usually walk from home.....(sometimes up to bout a mile or a hair more)
I'm not as lucky as bo. But both properties I hunt have a house and a place to park, one of them being a cabin that we stay in, so I do the same. Although the other property is just a large AG field with tree lines separating properties so it sure feels over a couple miles when you shoot one early season and have to drag it the edge of the field due to it being planter in either corn or beans haha
really...you could probably park under your stand....sounds crazy...but if its anywhere close to a field...you could get away with it....I have taken my boys hunting and all we did was park in the corner of the field and deer would come out....see the truck and act like nothins up.....long as your good and still....they are used to seeing vehicles...if its farm land
At our place I walk from the house. At the in-laws I park at the house and walk about 150yds. At a buddies place in northern MO can walk up to 3/4 of a mile.
Private land my shortest walk is less then 100 yards and farthest is hair over a mile and on Public its almost always at minimum a mile.
anywhere from 100 yards to 1/2 mile. We have stands right behind the barn, and stands way out on the other side of fields.
On private land less than 200 yards. On public at least 1/4 of mile or more depending on where I think other hunters are.
1 stand that is a mile, 1 stand that is 3/4 of a mile and 3 others that are a half a mile. The others are varying distances of less than a half a mile. Now let me elaborate to better answer your question. But I don't really pay much attention to the distance to my truck, only worried about it so I know how much time I need to allow to get to and from my truck. Other than that, I will take the long way to a stand if it means I can have a good entry exit and keep pressure of the heard. Of all the stands I listed above (5 of the longest distances I walk) it is because I am trying to put as little pressure on the property as possible. 2 of them I walk train tracks the majority of the distance and the other 3 I walk in a creek or a ditch to access the stand. In your situation I don't think it is the vehicle its self that is probably the issue but maybe the chemicles on your hunting clothing. I wouldn't change until I was outside of the vehicle and again I would make sure that you are utilizing the terrain to get to and from your stand. If that means walking in a calf high creek to get to your stand then do it! Best of luck!
Most private spots I hunt are anywhere from 150-500yds walk and public spots range from .5 - 1+ miles back in.
The previous 13-14 years I literally parked my truck, unloaded ATV, ride to spot, set up blind and parked ATV behind blind. People on local forums and such would chastise me and I'd bite back, but I plucked as many does as I could eat. This is the second or third year on this new property, but the first year with actual deer. My old method DOES NOT WORK. LOL! I've had to be more alert on the wind, ground blind is a no go and I leave my ATV at least 3-400yds behind and walk the rest of the way to my stand. That's just to see deer, haven't got one to come in closer than 71 yds so far. If it's a certain time of day or the wind just won't work with me, I walk the whole way. IMO, each property is different. This is what I've had to do to see deer on this property. I am loving being back in a tree stand. Much better view and options. Plus a harness is more comforting than it is a hassle. ETA: If my hunting buddy and I are there at the same time, which is usually the case - we leave the ATVs at least 3-400 yds before the first stand. Wouldn't do any good for me to leave mine back and him ride thru my set to get closer to his and vice versa.
All depends on where I'm hunting. Closest stand is probably a 100 yard walk, furthest is 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile.
Thanks guys I have been trying to break down my routine and I think that is really where I'm failing Sent from my ALCATEL ONE TOUCH 4037T using Tapatalk
I drive about a half hour to my farm. Its near a mile to my stands at that farm. I have been riding my quad half that and walking in. I parked it 200 yards from my stand last year and watched a bedded 170+ inch buck for 2.5 hours(45 yards) ...unfortunately when he got up he walked straight away from me. Neighbor killed him opening day of gun.
My shortest spot is about 100 yards behind my dad's house... so 120 yard walk. (Killed my biggest buck there too)
