While on stand, what way did you spot deer more than any other way?

    1. Heard it first.
    2. Saw it first.
    3. Came from behind, side, front?
    4. Just seemed to appear out of thin air.

For me, the deer kind of just materializes. It is like a "disturbance in the force" kind of thing for me, I just sense them. :)

I sense them and when I look, yup there they are. :D

I'd have to vote seeing them first. There has been many that I've heard before I saw but the majority are sightings first.

Just to add a little to the thread, I believe seeing before hearing is a good sign that a hunter is in tune with the hunt.

Most of the time I see them first. But I think hearing them first brings almost more of a rush to the hunt. You can hear something there then your mind started going crazy..is it a deer? doe? buck? how big?

I usually hear them first. One of our properties is very thick so we can't see very far to begin with. Our other property the deer come from the bedding areas to the beans so usually we hear them in the thicket prior to them making their way out to the beans.

I almost always see them first. I'm pretty good at picking out the flick of an ear or the lift of a hoof 80 yards through the underbrush. Then again, I've had deer just appear in front of me a time or two.

Last winter I was freezing in the bitter cold and wind. I stood there hunched against the tree, looking down at my feet, thinking I was nuts and no deer would be out in that weather.... when there appeared a deer under my feet. :) He was too small to shoot, but it made me wonder what might have walked by while I was staring at the platform of my treestand.

I do love it when it's dry and crispy and the deer are chasing each other through the woods.

More often than not, I hear them first.

Though they can seem to appear out of nowhere at times.
