When you think of vacation, do you think of sitting around all day, lounging by a pool, or on the beach, sipping on drinks and just overall relaxing?

Or do you want to get out, experience the new place, and explore as much as possible the culture of the area?

When you return from vacation, are you exhausted? Or are you refreshed?

Vacation in my mind is a combination of both. I don't want to be going every day, but at the same time I do not want to sit and do nothing the whole time either. There has to be a balance of both for me. Generally I feel refreshed when I return.

When I go on vacation It's usually on a lake. Lots of fishing gets done along with a few cocktails getting drank. Never do I sit and do nothing, I can do that at home. Also when you have a 4 year old daughter tugging at your leg to do this and do that there's no such thing as relaxing. When I get home I'm pissed and want to go back. Kind of like most hunting trips I've been on. I'm already pumped for the 4th of July to get here. We go on vacation every year on or around the 4th for a week. One of these years I've got to book a cabin at Fitz's resort and head up there.

All about the experience. Makes it a bit difficult when the wife likes to lounge on the beach and I want to explore, but we somehow strike a happy balance.

This is why I started this thread. The wife wants a resort beach vacation this summer. I hate resort beach vacations because all you do is sit around on the beach. That's it. That is all you do. And I hate them. "But it's so relaxing" she says. Yeah, and then after a day of sitting there, staring at the waves, I'm bored as hell.

I guess I do owe her this, since I did drag her up mountains for 5 straight days on our honeymoon, but still...

What? Are you implying I should go on vacation by myself, without my wife? Or are you saying that I should leave my wife while on vacation to go do something else at the resort? Because that is retarded because there is nothing else to do at these resort beaches.

This was what I was implying.

And you cannot leave? Cab? Being you're a hooker - I'm sure you're familiar with public transportation.

I'm with you. My wife likes to vacation places where it's hot and she can lay by the pool and/or beach. I personally prefer to do stuff other than be lazy, so we compromise. Our last trip to Cabo back in August we spent about 1/2 the time chilling at the resort, and the other half out doing stuff. Did some snorkeling, walked around town, went on some dune buggies, and went to a couple nice dinners as well. Both relaxing, and enjoyable. :tu:

I promised my wife I would always use one week of my time off work for her idea of a vacation. The rest of it I use for my idea of vacation, which generally consists of sitting in a tree somewhere.

For the last 2 years I've spent my vacation time at my new place up north and I couldn't be more happy.

I usually take a vacation to a beach someplace warm in the early spring, for about a week.

Then I take another vacation in the fall to the mountains where I am hiking and hunting every day.

The beach vacation for me includes snorkeling and some scuba, but mostly lots of umbrella drinks.

The mountain vacation is envigorating in the high altitude air. It is a mental break and in that sense relaxing, but not physically relaxing.

So there are both kinds of vacations, beach and mountain, and they are opposites, for me.

We just got back from a week in the Dominican Republic over Christmas. We stayed at an all-inclusive beach resort. She loves to lay on the beach and I like to be busy. I did spend some time on the beach but the whole family also went zip-lining in the rain forrest, snorkeling, rented dune buggies, ocean kayaking, and shopping. For one day, the boys and I left her to enjoy the beach while we went deep sea fishing. We always strike a good balance and everybody gets to have a good time. Its all about compromise. Even at the beach, she can relax while the boys and I swim, play volleyball, etc. I think we all came back feeling recharged.

What mountains..... you live in Florida. LOL

Me, I just started vacation. Took the truck in for a check up, had some lunch, took a ride in snow country with my buddy Donnie and am now sipping something cold. Dinner is started. My vacation ends New Years Eve. So, in 12 months I'll let you know what else I did.... if I make it that long. LOL

When I did normal vacations.... they were always family oriented. Did things the family wanted. No hunting, beaches, mountains, visiting friends, a week in lobster country, a week in Canada, cruise to Alaska etc etc etc. We did whatever we came up with.

What is this thing y'all call a vacation??????

The wife's idea of a vacation,
5 days in Gatlinburg.Staying in an expensive hotel, strolling through town and shopping at the T-shirt shops.Eating out at expensive places.

    My idea,
5 days in the woods hunting.Sleeping in a tent along side a secluded river as away from people as I can get.Making a meal out of whatever nature provides.

So I'll usually take her up there sometime during the year, then I get to go have MY kind of vacation all by myself.

I like to do things on vacation. But, since I have my summers off, I get plenty of time to do that (although a lot of people consider my summers "odd" in terms of relaxation). My wife and I will go on one vacation as many of you do where we relax and hang out by the beach (last year in the outer banks was the best of both worlds for activities and beach time), and then usually a week at the lake in Canada so I can fish, we kayak, I water ski, go for boat rides, campfires, etc.

Unlike all of you lucky SOB's, I don't get any vacation time in the tree.

most of my vacations consist of taking the wife back to upstate New york to see here grandma and fishing at her uncles pond. Otherwise I just take days off here and there to keep up with things around home. We did however take a couple Disney cruises in the past few years and those are the only vacations in my life where I have forgotten what day it was. can't wait for the next one!!!

This year we are taking a vacation in feb to my dads house in denver for a week. Weekend in Vegas in march. Week in Florida in June(cause that's where the fiancé wants to go) then my yearly Elk hunting trip first of September (without the fiancé). I also try to squeeze in a few quail/mule deer trips in nov and Dec.

My Wife is a Riviera Maya nut, we go there once or twice a year and do the all-inclusive thing. I love it due to the following routine.

    1. Wake up and hit the gym for 30 minutes then the buffet.
    2. Proceed to have two or three bloody mary's and two plates loaded with eggs, bacon, sausage and whatever meat they have.
    3. Go back to the room until the pool bar opens.
    4. Pool Bar from 10-5, usually take out a 750ml of Absolute Mandarin while the wife warns me not to drink too much. I tip the bartenders 10 bucks to ensure her 2nd and 3rd drinks are double or triple pours to lighten her up while getting all the other pool patrons to lighten up and get drunk.
    5. Head back for cold sobering shower so I can make the 7pm dinner.
    6. Hit the Cigar bar or whatever other bar has booze.
    7. Stumble to room sometime late and repeat step 1 when wife wakes me up at Sunrise.

I love it, all the booze and food I can muster and the wife is happy to be in Paradise.

Next trip is in May, we have a group of 14 people going.
