I hunt on several different farms around here. I take them a gift of venison or if they don't like venison I go to the best butcher around here and get them some nice cuts of beef. I write them a thank you note too. Just wondered what you guys do.
Almost all of the ground I hunt now is lease ground, so I would say by paying them. However, I do send a thank you card and gift certificate to them around Christmas time. I do have one farm that I hunt for free. It is owned by an older couple (late 80's). I have mowed their lawn, raked leaves, fixed the roof on their garage, and some other chores from them. I also bring them a few roasts, sausage, and grind every year, and send them a Christmas card with a gift certificate as well.
I trade them snow plowing all winter for hunting rights, and give them vension. I also offer to keep an eye on the place if they're gone for vacation.
Gift cards enclosed in a card telling how much you appreciate them and their generosity. Also, do some planting on another property for him.
I don't hunt anybody elses land for deer but I do pheasant hunt a few different spots owned by others. I'll usually give them a couple roosters each year and thank them for letting me pheasant hunt their land. Right now I'm helping my brother do a nice deed for the guys land that he hunts on. Were In the process of cutting down 140 tree's along a ditch In his field. His end rows are getting shaded too much from the tall Cottonwoods and boxelder tree's so were cutting them off a foot from the ground. The good thing Is that I get the wood to burn for my wood stove next winter. The bad thing Is that there Isn't that much oak. I'm making out good on It though as Is my brother and the owner. Everyone wins when people are good people.
I deliver a ham or tukey during the holiday season. I did this for a neighbor of one of my permission spots, as a token of appreciation for allowing me to recover a doe that had piled-up on his land. I ended up with an additional property : )
I always knew you were a cheap somebit** And thanks alot buckeye you cost me 600.00 the other day. I do alot of work for one of the guys who's property I hunt and the big farm I hunt once in awhile, I always send them a gift card around Christmas time. I always offer to help him and his family at the farm, but they never take me up on it. They really don't want anything but my friendship. They are awesome people, a little old fashioned, very giving, you don't meet many like them these days.
I send a gift card at Christmas, along with all the Venison Jerky that they can handle. Its an Urban area I hunt, so I also remove as many Does as the State of Ohio allows!! Whitey
I give the farmer a case of miller lite every year. I tried to give him a $50 card for cracker barrell and he said what the hell do I want to go there for. I told him he can take the wife and he threw the card back at me and said bring me my damn beer. Last year I played a little trick on him and drank 4 of them and gave him the case. Well 2 weeks ago I was at the bar near the farm for my buddies bday party and the farmer made me buy him 4 beers while I was there the sob. But of course I would buy 1 then he would and you get the point.
All good stuff guys/gals. Nothing more I can add as do much the same. Good land is harder and harder to come by. It's fantastic to keep good relationships. I'd like to consider my landowner more my friend than just my landowner. We do dinner with his wife and mine occasionally as well. I try to buy, it doesn't always work out that way. He volunteered his trailer to pick up my Harley when it's ready if it's too cold to ride home. I'm hoping to ride it though. Keep up good relationships.
