Looking to buy a crossbow, but wasn't sure how you would decock, or remove your arrow if you don't shoot anything. Is it really that safe to shoot it into the ground, or should you drag a target around in your truck and shoot that.

What is the most logical way to do this?

    Thanks

it's ok to shoot into the ground. keep one bolt with a field point on it or use the decocking bolt that is made to decock. personally when i had a crossbow i used the field point method. hope this helps.

My dad hunts with a crossbow. He always has an old arrow with a field point on it to shoot into the ground. When hunting our farm, he shoots into a round bale of hay. We have found that if you have sand (like along a creek) it works better than anything else. We have actually been considering making a few sand traps near some of the places we hunt.

This is the reason yard darts is no longer a game you can buy. HOWEVER, I do miss playing yard darts

Just use the cocking aid no need to spend the time on making sand traps.

Bring a target with you and shoot it with a field tip arrow really not diffcult. and you get a pratice shoot if its still daylight.

Heckler = very funny.. I miss "JARTS"
I like the sand trap idea alot, Im lucky enough to have a Foam Deer target in my yard.
Shooting into that target can be a pain, The bolts sink so deep w/field point's, i have to drill them out!!
The sand trap idea is cool, im gonna make 1 today..

i have blunt tip on an old arrow and shoot into a small yellow jacket target bag. Shooting into ground not too safe. You could hit a rock or stone.

    good point!!

I just fired a field point into what i thought was just sand, a small rock deflected the bolt and sent it off
    about 30 ft.
There a bunch of good ideas here, use what's best for you.
just be careful w/ground shot's, I luckily learned w/out injury.

I wait until I get back to the cabin where I keep a wore out cloth filled target to unload a field point in.

We ditch a small block target in the weeds where we park and pop one in there every time someone is done.

My dad brings a target with him and everytime he gets back to the truck he fires it into the target. I dont really like the idea of shooting it into the ground.

I would always win. Probably the safest place to be in that scenario is right where it was shot from

You shouldn't be shooting "arrows" from you crossbow, whatever your chosen decocking method.

    Sorry, I had to.
