I have 3 interviews within the next 3 weeks. Taking off one random Thursday afternoon for "personal reasons", ok, seems legit. But 3 in a row? I could lie and say it is something to do with my wife's pregnancy, like doctor appts or something, but if I accept a new position, my boss will know I was lying, and I don't want to burn any bridges with my current company.
Then be open/honest with them. In all honesty, doesn't seem like you have much of a choice. If you get the job and take it, they're going to know the absences were related. Did you let the companies know you were currently employed when they were scheduling the interview?
I'm not sure how my boss will take me interviewing with our competitors... Yes. They have tried to schedule the best they can, but I don't to make them bend their schedules too much.
You're over thinking things. If you decide to change jobs and give notice then your current manager will obviously know you interviewed at some point. I'm betting it won't even come up because at that point your manager will see it as moot.
Are you pretty confident you will be accepting one of these? This is a tough subject, but again it is "your" personal time right?
If you believe that you will have more opportunities with that new job then go for it. You could always say that you had the interview on some other occasion.
Not sure how your company is, but I could give the "personal reasons" excuse and that would be the end of it.
I'd use my vacation days and not mention anything of it. Don't pack up and leave them overnight, but what you do on your time off is your business. Just give them plenty of notice if you do indeed accept a new position.
well we are quite busy right now, and I have a lot of projects going on, so it is kinda hard for me to justify taking off "just cuz"
I disagree with this. I left my first "real" job for a competitor, and then was hired back by the first company with a much better offer and opportunity a few years in the future. Also if you are in a niche industry as well in a specific location, you will be surprised who you will work with again someday. I had my old boss from my old job actually call me a couple of months ago looking at one of the jobs on my current team that I now manage, and if he wasn't such a d-bag in my old job I might have considered hiring him. I say do the ethical thing and just take your vacation days without explaining. If you get asked let them know your just doing things to get better prepared for the family, because in reality you likely are. You never know when you might work with those people in the future and you can't burn bridges ever in business IMHO.
It's business as they said in the movie. No you don't tell your boss now. No you don't openly lie. You just say I have to have this time off. The interview may be a bust. Why would you want to piss off your present boss by talking to someone about improving your future. If it comes to pass that the job is what you want... you take it. You tell all people concerned you need to give the old boss notice and and whatever is appropriate. Some jobs demand more time to change over. This is where you don't burn the bridge. People do not in this day plan on 30 years with the same company. They move on, gain new experience and become a more valued person. If the time away from work is a problem, make appointments after work or on off days. No way do you need to piss people off with an interview. If you are truly afraid to do these interviews behind you bosses back... well tell him and be ready to suffer his rath if he's so inclined. As someone said....the right approach.... don't post it on the internet. LOL Don't make a lateral move. It's either a lot better... or you stay where you are. You piss off the current boss... you might be out of work completely. It's business. It's best not to burn bridges.... but you don't need to put everyone on edge. My son worked for a big company, left to work for 2 more big companies and is now back at the first company and tickled pink and makes silly money.
I'm all for bettering myself and so is my Union, they encourage me to do so. All I can say is be honest and let then know whats up, they may see the light and make you an offer to keep you around if you worth it!
It is your personal time or vacation time. Use it....and as somebody said previously...if they question it just use Family Business as your reasoning. Technically they do not need to know why you are taking time off. If you are just calling in and skipping...then they will likely question it. Just plan it in advance and take care of business.
Normally I can just take vacation with no problems, but we are swamped with beginning of the year projects starting at the moment. Most of these are my projects as well. It is hard for me to justify taking vacation "because I want to"
