I was reading the VA game and fish rules last night and stumbled across an oversight I believe. VA does not allow baiting but I found these inconsistencies: " Do Not Feed Deer Department regulation makes it illegal to place or distribute food, salt, or minerals to feed or attract deer from September 1 through January 1, statewide (unless noted in the exception below). This prohibition does not include the planting of agronomic crops or wildlife food plots." "Late Antlerless-Only Firearms Deer Season January 3, 2011-March 26, 2011 In the counties (including the cities and towns within) of Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William, except on Department-owned lands. During this season only antlerless deer may be taken. To firearms deer hunt on private lands in Fairfax County a special landowner permit is required (see above)." Bows are allowed during the firearms seasons in VA and I live in Prince William County. I guess I can now technically bait deer in the woods behind my house. What are your thoughts on how to interpret the above game laws?
Christine, we have a lot of does around here and I am pretty good judging them on the fly. Also my effective range is about 12-14 yards with the recurve so I am sure I can judge them from that distance. Bucks usually begin shedding around within the next two weeks although I have seen some still with their antlers into early March.
Well then that settles it Jeff. I am not sure why I did not look there (well I do know, I am a moron).
A few years ago I killed one that and found 3 in her. The two I killed this year, I didn't look....just gutted and thrown in a pile. I didn't want to see it again.
I am interested in the regs, though. Am I reading there's a late firearms season? Need a special permit? Do you need one of these for urban archery? I have a full VA license (all endorsements).
Now that has to be tough Dan. One year my wife's grandpa passed away and it was pretty hard on all of us. We went to see him in hospice care and the he suddenly passed away. I went hunting either a day or two later. I remember shooting a doe with yearlings. As I came upon that doe I saw milk dripping from her teets. To be honest with you, I was affected. It was hard.
Its because of the Chronic Wasting Disease that was discovered out west. The disease is spread by saliva..that is what they told us (the GW) at the IBEP course I went to last fall.
