How do you go about hanging your hang-on stand and sticks?

I got my first hang-on stand for Christmas last year. Sometime in the next couple weeks I am going to the property I hunt and hanging it.

So how do you do it? What gear do you need? Do you need a lineman's belt? Or is it just nice to have? Right now I only have HSS pro safety vest.

Since this is going to be a permanent location I don't necessarily need the quiet, fast installation method if there is a way to do it without buying more gear.

So lay it out for me. What do you use to hoist your stand once your sticks are installed and how do you strap it in the safe way. Thanks.

What I do is screw in my steps before I hang my stand (couldn't tell ya on the sticks, never used them). To hang my stand, I use a long rope over a branch above where I want the stand to hold it there while I strap it down. A linemans belt makes things easier, especially when screwing in steps. I didn't buy one, I just used a rope and tied it off with a strong knot.

well what i do is take a ladder out with me. i'd pick the tree, cut and clear branches out of the way. then attach a rope to the stand on the ground, climb the ladder and pull up and attach the stand. then i'd climb down and put all the ladder pieces together and lean it against the tree and tie the straps. once that was finished i'd make sure i had shooting lanes available and trim if necessary. don't forget to attach a rope or line to the stand to bring your bow up. i've done this many times and it is by far the easiest way to do it, if you can :)

    1. Lineman's belt
    2. Rope
    3. Cordless Screw Driver with 5/16" bit. (if you are putting in screw in steps)
    4. Pruning saw
    5. Pull rope for your bow ( for the price, I buy one for each set)

Picture where the stand needs to go in the tree, plan your "route" up to it, and start putting your sticks or steps in. When you are going up the tree to place the last one, tie the rope to your belt and to your stand and when you are in position haul up your stand, this is where the lineman's belt pays off. Have fun, good luck, and have fun.

I use screw in steps and stay tied while installing them. Once they're set I use this belt/lanyard to hold (hooks on each side) my bow and the stand. It works great so you are hands free with nothing to pull up.

What do the guys that use Muddy harnesses use for a lineman's belt? Will the HSS lineman's belt work on the Muddy? Are there better lineman's belts out there than the HSS one? Thanks.

if it's a straight tree i will take my climber and set the stand using the climber as my platform for work and safety , and on the way down i will put in my steps with a 18v cordless drill and extra battery
as far as steps i use screw in or l-bolts for concrete foundation's that can be bought at home depot for about a dollar a piece 1/2 x 9 long with a l on one end and just drill a 1/2 hole at a slightly upward angle about 4'' deep
the nice thing is you can remove the bottom 4-5 steps and hide them near your tree to keep unwanted people out. works great for me

I always try and bring a friend along for safety sake.

The reason I got this hang-on is because there are no trees that work for a climber in this location.

And for everything to note. I am not using screw in steps. I am using sticks.

    Gear:

    - TREEHOPPER lineman's belt
    - Hammer/hatchet (for stubborn screw in steps or branches in the way)
    - Ratchet straps
    - 2 screw in steps
    - 20' of rope
    - Bow haul line

They way I do it takes me 20-30 minutes tops from the time I pick my tree.

I usually have my sticks assembled before heading off into the woods if possible. (Stick in one hand, backpack on with gear and the stand on top of my pack)

I go in and lay the TOP of the stick against the base of the tree and walk the stick up.

Begin putting your belt on obviously and cinching each cam-buckle strap tight so that the ladder is tight.

Then I go down and tie the 20' rope to the stand and put my straps in my pockets, then wrap the rope around my shoulder, put the belt on the tree again and climb up until all the slack is out of the rope. Once you're up top, hoist the stand up.

Position the stand loosely where you want it, then make the final decision (I put it 1' above and to the left of the top step) and hang it loosely with one strap. Get the next strap on loosely and then tighten up the bottom, then the top.

Then stand and reach almost as high as you can, and put a screw in step above the ladder so that you can grab it and hang onto it as you pull yourself into the stand.

Then position your bow hanger and haul line, and you're done!

On the way down I always double check the cam-buckles on the ladder. It's simple and easy and FUN- gets more easy every time you do it.

I take a ladder, the stand, rope, and the steps. Start by hoisting the stand up by tying the rope to it and pulling it up over a branch. Then tie the other end tight around a tree. Climb the ladder and strap the stand. Move the ladder and put the steps on. Or you can put the steps on first so you know how high to go.

    hooyman saw
    lineman's belt
    bow hook
    4 lone wolf sticks
    stand
    hss harness
    hss treestand hanger
i put my sticks up first with my harness on and lineman's belt tightening as i go up
put them as far apart as possible, cutting branches off the man tree as i go up
put up my hss stand bracket
climb back down the tree and hook up my stand on the ratchet pulley
climb back up the tree and sinch the stand to the tree
get on the stand and let my weight suck it into the tree
trim some more and screw in my bow hanger
climb down and take the two sticks closest to the ground with me

I use that belt- and absolutely love it. It makes it so easy to get up into the tree and work with both hands. I couldn't imagine working without it. DEFINITELY a bargain at $40!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just ordered the HSS system Lineman's belt before I saw this. I hope the HSS is okay as well?

Great tips guys. I really like the idea of putting a tree step above your stand as a handle to safety step into your stand.

Those of you that are talking about putting the rope over a branch. Are you talking about using that branch as a type of "pulley" and then pulling from the ground to raise it?

    Keep'em coming!

Certainly, but you have to wear the vest to use it. I like mine alot.

Attach sticks as I go up. Once sticks are secure go down tree, put stand over my shoulder, climb tree, balance and secure the stand..

What? You wanted me to lie and tell ya I'm tied off??

I'm sure the HSS will be just fine for you.

Using a screw in step as a handle is great. There's even been some set-ups where I've used two steps (when I was putting a stand between two trees that were close together) and was able to brace myself and pull myself into and then the second step doubles as the bow hook. Works out nicely and makes it super easy climbing into stand on those frosty morning.

You can certainly use a branch as a pulley. I did that in the beginning, but then I found that it was just as easy for me to coil the rop around my shoulder and then hoist my stand up once I was at the desired height, and then I generally just tie the rope off at the top stick step so the stand doesnt fall if I happen to have any trouble setting it.

One tip that I'll recommend...when you go to hang it...think of what side of the tree you want the STAND on and DO NOT put the ladder on that side of the tree-- may seem like common sense but it's easy to pick a side you want to set up on and then put the ladder there. If you put the stick on the same side that you want the stand, you'll never be able to climb into the stand! Does that make sense to ya??

    Yes, lol.

I hung my first stand ever with no belt, and talk about a mistake. I got everything done, but it wasn't any fun.

I got a belt immediately afterwards from one of our members...TREEHOPPER! lol.
