I had the pleasure of being mr. mom yesterday as my wife was out of town. I spent the entire day with my three little ones. Last night I was sitting on my bed and watching a science show with my kids when each of them said something that seemed small, but the more I thought about it I began to ask myself, "how the heck do we go from having such cute little kids to war and brutality?" My 4 year old said to me, "daddy I am going to bring candy to my birthday party tomorrow to share with my friends....and I like to scratch your back.". My 8 year old said, "dad, its like I was born to do it" (in reference to him shooting a bow so well yesterday). And my 9 year old said, " Dad, can I sleep with you, I really like to lay with you and watch science shows and stuff?".

I mean how in the heck do we move from such great little kids to killing each other, putting guns to each others heads, dropping freaking 10,000 lb bombs on each other, etc?

Is it money, power, or just general human nature?

Not everyone has the same upbringing. Some are never taught right from wrong.

Because if we believe in good,we must also believe in evil. There are evil people that do evil things. Sometimes to protect what is good and right,we need to fight what is evil.

It all depends on how they are raised Brett.

I struggle with this a lot, Brett. I was really bad a year and a half ago when my mom's long-time best friend was losing here two year battle with cancer. What Tfox said (and if I remember, something Fitz told me at the time similar to this) is one of the best explanation for me anyways.

I was raised that there are good and evil people. I was also raised to think that the good people must take action against those that are willing to do evil upon us.

That being said, this world is seriously out of control with evil individuals. I am no saint and have my days as well.

There have been evil people since the begining of time. Amazing how much more you notice once you have kids of your own.:)

The world is also a much smaller place than it once was with media outlets in every corner of the world.

You're doing a great job with your kids. This is how we all want our kids to be. People don't realize that we are at a disadvantage because humans are violent by nature. It's not our fault. We need to be taught how to love and taught NOT to hate. Toddlers hit, bite, and kick. No one teaches them how to do this. Its instinctive. Being a parent is teaching children how to act with compassion and why hurting others is wrong. This is why a good upbringing is so important. If people aren't taught differently, they will act on instinct, not logic. I don't know if I'm wording this how I mean it to sound. But you catch my drift? By showing children love (not just towards them but towards others too), we are able to reach further.

Agreed. I don't think there is necessarily more evil know, its just easier to hear about it all. And easier to blow out of proportion. Bad news receives better ratings and more views than good news.

While watching the news with my 8 year old daughter the other day, she says, "I don't like the news. All they do is tell you about all the bad things that happened today."

I agree with your daughter. She must be the brains of the family.:poke:

Philosophical question: So how do we determine what is evil and what is good? What is bad news vs good news? Why does one group lament an action while another group celebrates it? Is there a standard of right and wrong somewhere?

Different cultures have different standards, but I would go out on a limb and say the standards set forth for our society stem from the bible. The bible set the norms of society, and gave a guide line for right and wrong.

Are there not many people/cultures who reject the Bible but whose cultures still hold to many of the same standards? Are there factions of our society who reject the Bible because they choose to behave outside its "norms?" Are those people then "evil" for doing so and those who believe it "good?" So, is Bible, the accepted standard? If so, is evil a trait we all share? And if so, we have a really big problem...what is the answer?

The cultural norm. it evolves with the human spirit. Our (USA) culture revolves around equal rights for everyone, but in Afghan it is the cultural norm to beat and disfigure women. God Bless the U.S.A!

Is it then, good for an Afghani man to beat and disfigure a woman because it is culturally acceptable "there?"
