It's really foggy outside... Not going to stop me,butit got me to thinking, with your experiences, have you noticed anything different about deer movement in fog? Less movement.... More... just the same??
I had a heavy fog role in me the other night on the mountain. I couldn't see a thing, so if they moved I couldn't see them. If I knew the fog was set in and visibilty was going to be really low, I'm not sure I'd waste my time.
I just finished reading an article in Petersens hunting where they did a very long study and determined deer move the most when the temp is between 50 and 60 and then they move the most during those periods when the fog is out. Moisture in the air or something of thet nature was their reasoning. I simply believe if they are hungry they move. I know quite a few guys who hunted the fog tonight and no one saw crap, but on here and HNI several guys killed deer. I guess it depends on what went on at your camp , as to what opinion you get.
Well I got My first kill this year tonight in the fog, it actually lifted, rained, shot deer, stop raining, fog back in. lol
I would like to think it would have to do with how dense the fog is. Deer see better in lowlight conditions so if it were a light fog and the deer were able to see just as clearly as normal, then I would assume they'd move just the same. The added moisture in the air would also benefit the deer as it would kick up their already awesome sense of smell to another level. But of course, extremely thick fog that greatly limits visibility will slow deer movement.
I love hunting the fog - seem to have had good deer movement those days - plus I just love the calmness and "spookyness" of it all...
I've hunted slight fogs, and the hunting was phenomenal...probably more so the time of year and fact I was in a creek bottom, but I saw alot of deer nonetheless.
Foggy creek bottom = my biggest buck. Careful, because in that High humidity, scent really hangs in the air.
Wow, talk about the stars aligning. I've had good and bad days hunting the fog. I've had a couple of morning sits where the fog moved in after daybreak and hung around for an hour or two then lifted, and I mean thick fog. After it started lifting, the field would be full of deer. I've also had hunts where I didn't see anything in fog. I don't know that it has much of an effect on them.
I have taken several good bucks just as the fog was lifting. Most memorable, 1978 fresh out of the Core, had spent the past 2 years at Parris Island as a Drill Instructor (did not get to hunt those years). Opening morning of season in Grayling MI, a mouse had just stopped by my shoulder to say good morning as it seemed like everything around me was waking up. The fog began to lift and a great Mi 8pt was working its way toward me, seemed like it took forever to get to where I could take a shot. It was my first with a Compound also. There was 7 of us at opening week bow camp that year to share laughs, good and bad food, and lots of drink. I remember thinking at the time, It don't get no better than this. Ever now and then my mind drifts back to that place in time and I think, It don't get no better than that !
Wow!! 1978, I was -2 years old. I love hearing these stories tho. That's why I always try and listen to you guys. Ya'll have alot more experience than myself and the stories never get old.
Last year it was really foggy during the youth season and the deer were moving around us everywhere. We had a GIANT buck come to 30 yards, but it was not legal shooting hours. It was so foggy out you could just make out the rack in the scope. My son couldn't make out the deer at all so I tried to let him look at it through the scope, but he couldn't find it. After the fog lifted and burned off wee saw 7 young bucks and 4 does. The deer were everywhere. This also happened last year. I was walking in to stand on Oct 11th 2008 to a high ridge top where we get all our good buck pics. I got to 30 yards on two big bucks with my red night light on. One of them was a really tall 8 (145) and the other was a young 11 point (140) and they were looking at me, but had no idea what I was until I got really close and took a knee. The fog definitely has my attention!
