Tembry, I am actually enjoying my hunts more now that I am scouting more each season. I have less time to hunt these days with three small children and a high energy wife...I have to scout to get it done in about 6 weeks as my late season hunting has gone by the wayside because of my wife coaching high school basketball.

If I hunt 0 hours, this year......my scouting to hunting ratio will be 1-1.

Depends on my job. Some years It's been a ton more scouting then hunting and others It's been the exact opposite.

LOL Jeff! Everyone's situation is different. For me, I love to get out of my hectic world for a few hours while I walk up and down some beautiful terrain.

If hanging stands, trimming branches, etc counts as scouting then I'm probably 1 to 2 scouting to hunting

If you consider "glassing" while sitting in a pick up from a safe distance as scouting , I scout about once or twice a week in the last hour of dark during July and August. Outside of that, I don't do much scouting, so my ratio will be pretty low.

If you call driving on Forest roads and checking general areas for access and vegetation/terrain as scouting, then I spent 1 day scouting the Unit I will be mule deer hunting in Colorado this year.

Roughly 25% scouting 75% hunting. Majority of my scouting takes place from January to April.

used to be 40% scouting to 58% hunting...... the 2% is for when i'm out hunting but i'm up in the tree sleeping :)
this year will be different, i hope to get out on the land i'm hunting with my friend and his dad a couple times before i hunt it, with one of the times being less scouting and more tree stand hanging

I 'scout' far more than I hunt. Hardly a day or two goes by when I don't review aerial photos online. Right now I am putting roughly 15 hrs. a week glassing deer in the evenings on public land here in MI. So far it is paying off.

    Pre-kids: maybe Scout:Hunt of 1:3
    Three-kids: this year 0 scouting

But this also has to do with where I hunt. I hunt primarily our 65 acres, and a 2200 acre State Park that I've walked ever bit of for the last 20 years...with whitetails, things do not change...it's either corn or beans, same trails, same bedding areas...if I'm going to take time from family - I want a bow in hand.
The fun part will be as the kids grow and we get back into scouting for their enjoyment.

I forgot to add that when It comes to bear hunting It's probably about 10 to 1 favoring scouting.

i scout pretty hard even after i found my hunting spot i'm always interested in when and where the deer are moving from and to and why they are moving. unfortunately this year i've been busy w/ family i've got a 10yrs old, a soon to be 2yrs old, a soon to be 1 yrs old, and a wife, and work and everything that gets in the way of the things you love to do i'm sure i'm not the only one but i'm going to make more time to get in the woods.
