camping is fun, living on a farm and eating cow tongue and brains, pig feet snout and ears not so much when your 6 years old. Funny today but not then. the real parts of the animals got taken to town and sold.
My FIL has some similar stories from his childhood. His parents learned to never waste any part of an animal during the depression. Rich folks would dump the remaining portions of cows, pigs, chickens, etc on the side of the road for those more in need. All the good parts were taken, so you had to make due with what was there. They ate everything, a lot of which went into some sort of stew. When my FIL was young and his parents got back on their feet, they would purchase a pig every so often from a local farmer. They never wasted any of it. He tells a funny story of the chops being the last thing left on the table. They weren't used to eating them.
I made tacos de lengua (beef tongue tacos) last week. Had Pho with tripe and other unknown parts the other day as well. Alot of the throw away cuts from beef and pork are delicious. Pork ear is wonderful.
Nothing like fresh cows milk right out of the cow.. grew up on that on our ranch.. and grandpa's ranch. I still remember my grandma scraping the thick cream off to the side..before pouring it!
Hooker you are the man, how about fried squirrel brains actually you fry the heads and suck the brains out covering the eye holes with your fingers. Old school style.
At our old hunting lease, there was an old hermit who lived nearby that we befriended. We stayed at his house as a camp. He always cooked for us. We would always kill a few squirrels, and he would make squirrel heads and rice with gravy. So yeah, I've had my fair share of squirrel brains
Squirrel brains .. wow. I guess I am spoiled with elk and whitetail, never felt the need to eat squirrels with what fills my freezer. Thats hardcore Ultra.
While out in Iowa, I noticed how big the squirrels were, I was shocked..and thought.. they would actually add up for a meal... here on the other hand, they are plentiful but pretty small.. anyway.. do you just skin them and gut them and fry up the meat? do you take it off the bone, how do you process a squirrel? for years I have heard so many guys talk about eating squirrel..
Pressure cook the crap out of them till the meat is falling off the bone. De-bone, then use the meat in either a rice dish with a dark gravy or make a stew.
Had this many times growing up. Also good with cottontails. Hook, we'll have to grab that beer together in hell. We can talk about good eats. Of course we can never have it again because it will be hell, but still fun to talk about.
I love food. I like trying different kinds but I havent gone too far out of my way to try real unusual stuff. I'm always trying cooking things with different seasons and pairings. When I am out at a restaurant It all depends on the menu and mood as to whether I try something new/interesting or stick with something more common. To this day one of my all time favorite foods is frog legs...and it's been a long time since i've had some. I need to fix that. Troy, I don't even know I would bother with the squirrels you guys have out there. They are tiny far all the meat you might get. Back here like you saw in Iowa we have big gray & fox squirrels. You can get decent amount of meat off them. Pretty tastey when made right too.
??? I was wondering that.. thanks Ryan. maybe I can try some squirrel then when I come out to whitetail hunt with ya someday.. I'll have to ask Jay if he eats those Iowa squirrels too.
We'll definitely have to grab a few hot Miller Lites in vortex bottles while in hell because I imagine that is all they will have
The TVs in the bars will probably play Miller Lite commercials on repeat too. Oh the good times we will have.
