The other thread about dining out has me wondering how adventurous some of you are at eating?

When you dine out, do you usually go for the same dishes that you are familiar with? Or do you always try to get something new? I'm not talking about a new chicken dish just prepared a different way, I'm talking about something new entirely.

When you cook at home, do you have a normal rotation of dishes? Or are you constantly playing with new flavor combinations and textures.

My wife basically orders the same everywhere we go. If it's a casual place, she will order a hamburger, and if it's fine dining, she is ordering steak. The woman seriously loves her beef. I on the other hand, rarely order the same thing. I enjoy discovering new flavors. She will order different items when forced, such as when we go to an ethnic place, but even then she keeps it relatively safe. Her reasoning is that she does not want to waste a good meal on something she does not like. My reasoning for ordering something new every time is, how do I know I will not love it? And if I don't like it, then I've just become more educated about food.

This might be why I love restaurants with seasonal or daily menus so very much. It's constantly changing, and I never know what they might have on their menu.

Sorry for talking about food so much, but it is something I'm very interested in.

I'll try about anything, but my wife....not so much. She never ate fish until I conned her into it, finally tried crab-cakes at the urging of her sister, then one night when I got some, she tried crab-legs.... One of her all-time favorites now.... She'd always thought a steak had to be WELL DONE, once she tried a steak cooked medium the "right way," she realized steak can be good if it's not OVER-COOKED!!!

I love trying new foods, and there aren't many foods I won't try at least once. Except for the stuff they used to eat on Fear Factor. Sorry Joe Rogan, I would be eliminated.

My wife is the same when it comes to food, as in, she likes to try new foods/dishes.

I literally get pissed off when someone orders a steak pass medium. I had my sister and her husband over for dinner, and I was pan searing tenderloins. My sister insisted that I cook her steak well done. I refused. I ended up heating up some frozen chicken tenders for her to eat like I would an 8 year old.

I'm getting pissed just thinking about it.

I hear many people say this, and it is true for most people when the food is presented to them from some one else, and it's free.

But do you actively try to find new foods to cook at home or order at restaurants?

My wife never had venison before she met me. She likes it, but it has to be well done...or as I like to call it, "ruined". When processing a deer, I package thin and thick steaks together so I can cook them the same amount of time.

My daughter is being raised right though. If its passed pink, she lets me know about it...and she isn't happy.

I am probably the pickiest eater on this site. I "had" to eat certain things that I could not stand as a kid, I vowed that when I was adult out on my own I would ONLY eat exactly what I liked to eat. I will add, I like almost all flavors for example onions, mushrooms etc....but... My hang up with what I choose to eat and pass on is strictly based on textures. I am a texture eater first no matter how good something smells or tastes.. I wont eat cooked onions or mushrooms because of texture! I hate the texture...If the texture agrees with me, I eat it. If the texture disagrees... I gag.

I am open to most anything..once..but again if I dont like the texture.. its off the list.. I do love sushi if that helps.. :)

Yes on both, but we are limited by cost. There are a lot of restaurants we would like to try, but a little too expensive for us.

If I had to take a non hunting or fishing related vacation, it would be centered around the food of that particular region. My wife and I have discussed this, and she's all for it.

In general, we try new foods, new flavors and we also like to try old foods new ways. My wife is very good at this, combining flavors, spices, etc. into something new. My preference is in the comfort food arena, hers is more exotic. One ethnic food I am not a big fan of, although I will eat it and try new dishes, is Asian cooking.

Every vacation we take, I study the restaurant scene thoroughly before we go. I've been dieing to go to NYC, Chicago, and San Fran just for their restaurants.

NYC is high on our list. I literally do not care about doing anything else in NYC, besides going to restaurants.

I feel the exact same way.

If y'all decide to ever visit NOLA, let me know and I can steer you away from all the tourist traps and towards the real food.

I'd love to try some real cajun food someday.

I also want to spend a day riding around with Billy the Exterminator , or someone from Swamp People. Is that something you can pay to do?

Whoa, whoa now, NOLA isn't cajun. NOLA is creole. Get it right or you will be pegged as filthy tourist from the beginning.

And I think Billy is too big these days to do any actual work. His company sprays our office building, and he has never showed up.

would this include what you will eat when you are truly starving..... When i was a child spending summers at my grandparents home in hillbilly heaven 1968-1972 and hey lived off the land, they grew and ate everything, homemade milk and butter
chickens, pigs ,cows and garden foods, I hated it. They ate all of the animal I dont want to ruin what you guys may eat this week so i will spare you the details.

My bad...thanks for the heads up.

Although I think my lack of an accent might give me away still. I'll work on it. Need to watch more Swamp People.

I don't think I would consider anything at Applebee's adventurous, but hey, that's a start, right?
