I have a feeling that the guys sent to finish installing the privacy fence around my backyard (the posts were put in last Monday) are hourly employees. 8 1/2 hours after starting, they are just now starting the slats. Got a feeling they won't be done today.

We have a crew of builders that we do concrete work for. They're the same way, slooow and paid hourly building a house. Meaning they don't bid the job the cost is time+material. After doin the basement for one house we went back coupoe weekslater to do the garage floor and pourch caps. The week we were they they stood up three studded walls, about 30' of wall total.

Just for timeline reference the time it took them to build the one house we completly finished three basements and two had stick built houses pretty much completely done before these guys were finishing drywall.

Maybe the stuck it to you and you paid to much for the fence and they are trying to make you feel your getting your moneys worth :poke:
    Just joking with you

Im GUESSING you agreed on a flat price for fence and install ?
If so how long it takes them shouldn't cost you more
But I know its frustrating watching it

If u got a price for a completed job then I wouldn't worry. It could go one of 2 ways. Either builder/fence company gives u a bid, or they came on by the hour. Either way, I`m sure u have a few jokers out there that make 12-15$ an hour. If u are getting charged by the hour u definitely need to address the problem. U could be paying 40-50 an hour for those guys. But if its a bid job, those guys are playing around wasting boss mans money, and it`ll bite them in the future. As a builder, sometimes theres a lot going on and it becomes a little harder to keep track of everybody, if that's the case the man receiving the check should probably know about it.

They were paid for the job. Right now, they are putting up slats by nailing the slats to the middle cross beam only. Oh, and they are over a month late.

The boss is not on site today. The only hold I have is the remaining 50% still owed. I have two dogs boarded since September because of the delays have cost me an additional sum close to $1K. This is the third contractor up here that has not met their quotes and dates.

Unfortunately with the building trades, anybody with a skilsaw and a truck thinks that they are a carpenter. My crew has been out straight since spring, and some customers wanted to get projects underway, which resulted in some chaos. We have 3 jobs, which have been started by other contractors, that we are scheduled to finish or fix. Theres a lot of fly by nighters out there, and many times its hard to tell whos who. I`d call the boss and discuss whats going on, and definitely keep an eye on the quality of the fence. IMO don't pay for s***** work.

Nails?? On a privacy fence??? Maybe it is just me Mark but I would be insisting on screws. I did alot of that type of work in a previous life and I cannot tell you how many 2 year old fences I got paid to redo because they were intitially thrown together with nails.....

Tom, I am so irked right now on how much I've had to put out for my pups to be boarded since mid September, I will have them finish the job, then address their shabbiness when it's time to pay them, just so I can get the pups here at home with us. This has gone on long enough. But rest assured that I will direct others away from this builder, who has been in business somehow for over 30 years in this area.

I'm very close to start paying one of my employees by the load rather then hourly like he's getting paid now. Sick of him milking the clock. Total BS!!!

Might start doing so starting the new year if things don't change. He's getting his warning tomorrow. I never did this to anyone when I was paid hourly. I hate seeing people do it. Not right.

That's because you were raised to give 100 percent and you did and still do. Today, people tend to be slackers. Its hard for you to imagine taking advantage of an employer, but many give it no second thought. Pay him on a commission basis and set a minimum standard to meet each month. You deserve solid employees.

** sorry for the hijack IV

My previous life in shipping I had dealings with all sorts of truckers and trucking, all of which were by the load. I know your deal is a little different. But I hate to see a business owner like yourself mistreated.

Oh and IV good luck, don't be too friendly.:tu:

Steve, just make sure the per load pay includes the safety of him and the truck. Matt, don't worry about it. I went out and checked on the price of a big enough box of screws to do the job properly + 10 hours @ $25 per hour (at his employees speed) to install all the screws. I figure late plus all the corrections I have to make should be worth $500 off the bill.
