I live in a log cabin way back in the woods on a hardwood hill top.....on Sat. Mornings, my wife makes the coffee and I drive down to the mailbox to get the Paper. When I got back to the house and stepped out of the car this morning a Gobbler cut loose about a hundred yards behind the house. Man I love that sound. SB
SB, are you hunting for them this spring? do you guys have different assigned seasons for them. We have, I believe, 3 day seasons with the DNR assigning your dates to you.
Sweet deal. I am hoping I will hear that sound a lot soon. I think I know where they are living, now I just gotta find "the tree"!
Thanks for that pointer slick. "The Tree" is where they are going to be coming from.....:d You're a Turkey Whiz.
Headin out tomorrow to go down and take down a stand/shed hunt for a few hours when I have to pick up my boat and bring it home for spring tune up....still debating whether or not I want to leave early enough to listen for gobbles. I highly doubt what I hear now will help me come season, but it is always good to hear some gobbling.
I haven't heard any gobbles yet, but I they are starting to move back to the horse fields now that the snow is melting. Can't wait!
Congrats, also. I love that sound too. Haven't heard 1 in a lond time but, I plan on gettin after em soon. Our season opens up April 11th and ends May 16th with a 3 bird limit. If you get all 3 in the spring, you can't get any in the fall. We have a youth hunt April 4th i'm taking my son on. Wish you all success.
In the words of a wise one, used to be my little sisters favorite. SPONGEBOB- Im ready, Im ready, Im ready, Im ready, Im ready...............
I've always been curious, why the hell isn't Illinois busting at the seams with turkey? Cropland with small woodlots screams turkey habitat, but the NE section of the state, distribution maps have them only following creeks and rivers in areas they populate....what is the deal here? Has the IL NWTF chapters/DNR just not done enough to release birds in those areas, or is there something uninticing for birds to live there? Iowa seems to be the same way.
I believe it was four years ago, I saw my first "wild" turkey flying from roost one morning when I was on stand. In fact, I didn't even know what they were at first. Heck, when the DNR went to the "Call-in, check-in" process for deer, wild turkeys and bobcats were two species they would ask for number of sightings while hunting. On that same property now (I can't really hunt there anymore), I saw atleast 20-30 turkeys (with plenty more around) while taking down a ladder stand this past fall. This piece of property follows the IL River. The property I can hunt, and have seen turkeys, follows a good size creek. I am banking on the flock to continue to grow in numbers. As for the whys, I could speculate that predation and harsh winters in the past may have been a contributing factor, but I really don't know for certain. Increased housing development which ruins habitat could be a major reason why turkey populations have dwindled farther NE of my house, hence why distribution would show larger populations near ground less suitable for development. All I know is some species seem to come and go. We once had a good population of fox and pheasant. Around my parts they are both few and far between now. Red-tail hawks were once scarce, now we have them everywhere. I guess turkeys are following suit with the Red-tails and starting to appear around my parts again.
IDW, you're in WI, correct? We have 6 seasons that are 5 days long each. They start in Mid-April and run Wed-Sun, with Monday and Tuesdays off. One has to apply for specific units and seasons. Did you apply?
I've been hearing that sound for a few days no. They've been calling back to the horn chirp when I lock my truck doors. I snuck up on them the other day and got a few pics.
Yep they were sounding off this morning. I got up early to go fishing and walked outside and just sat on the porch and listened to the show. That sound just gets under my skin until opening day of turkey. I LOVE IT!
