I checked the score card thread and noticed another guy with the username shaneb21. I should have looked around before changing my username because the only difference is two capital letters and a number. Glad my favorite number isn't 21 or that would have been a little weird.
Hey scooter. If I were to get into traditional archery what spine arrow should I get for a 45-55lb recurve if I had a 300 grain point and 100 grain insert? Should I go 400 spine or 500 spine?
With that much weight I would say a 300 spine but it would depend on your draw length and how you shoot. Honestly a 300 grain point is a lot I would say a 200 will kill anything in North America and many African animals. So here is the deal with shooting a traditional bow, you must must must tune your arrow. I prefer bare shaft tuning. Traditional is a lot more complicated and more of a hobby you must be dedicated to, to get good at it. All due respect to all the compound shooters but with a traditional bow you have to spend time shooting a bare shaft till it flies straight and impacts straight at 5, 10, 15, 20 yards and beyond if you so choose.
I'm guessing my draw would be somewhere around 26 or 26.5 and I don't want to over bow myself so I may just start with 50lb limbs which at my draw would be less. I know all about the tuning as I've been very interested last few years, just never got a recurve. I'm looking at a samick sage for a beginner bow. I've read and watched a lot of good reviews on them. The only reason I picked 300 grain point is because the broadhead I would like to use when I get good enough weighs that much. Honestly I don't expect to hunt with one for at least two to three years just because I know they take time to get used to. I used one of my friends grandparents old 35lb recurve and could do pretty well at 15 yards and closer but that's pretty light weight to hunt with.
There are many many many fixed blade heads that weight less than that. The Badgers I'm using are awesome and they are 125's with a total arrow weight of 525. I also have 125g of weight behind the insert so it hits with a lot of KE. I really think if your not going out hunting for African big game then a 125-200 grain tip would be plenty for that set up. You drawing at 26" on a 50# recurve would be at 45# for your length. Just my .02c though
I was actually looking at the badgers in 125 grains. I think if I do get into traditional archery I'll get some gold tips with brass inserts and a 50 grain weight with a 125 grain tip. I will start out with 50lb limbs and maybe a year later or so get 55lb limbs. The sage limbs aren't expensive compared to the others out there so I may buy a 60lb set too because of my short draw it would be less weight anyway. But I will go at a slow pace and get accurate before going into a heavier set of limbs.
Well guys, pretty slow weekend for me here in suburbia. Saw 2 does Saturday morning and got blanked Sat afternoon and this morning. Took the afternoon off to enjoy the nice weather and get some yard work done around the house. Looking like a cold front moving in on Thursday so I'll be making my first trip to our lease on Saturday. Cold temps, NW wind and a spot that hasn't been touched so far. Could be good! Anyone out there having any luck?
Hunted friday night saw a few does but no shots. My buddy n same property was covered in deer. He passed a nice wide 8pt and got a glimps of a 190" we are chasing. Good sign seeing him in shooting hours!!
I finally finished hanging stands on Sunday and bought my tags on Monday. Planning to go out on Friday morning with this drop in temps and high pressure coming. Not sure if I'll be hunting or filming but either way should be fun.
Yea I'm pretty jacked for the cold front and drop in temps this weekend also....I'll be hitting the woods hard! Hopefully the bucks are up and on their feet! Think I'm calling in sick on Friday. So I can get to it Friday, Saturday, and Sunday...might sit all day Saturday, not sure yet thoguh. Depends on how the movement is in the morning and I haven't checked the moon phase yet either.
Seen my first piebald on foot this morning. Crossed me at 10 yards. The only spot he had white was on his legs. Small dink but cool to see.
Finally getting back out into the woods this weekend, and the weather is looking perfect to have some of the big boys up on their feet and moving. Here are some recent pictures of the top 3 buck I'm chasing, no day time pics of any of them yet, but it keeps getting closer and closer. First one here is called sky scraper for obvious reasons, this buck has been visiting our foodplots nightly and has been checking scrapes along the way. This buck doesn't have a name, but he's number one on the hit list. He's been showing back up after disappearing for a while in August and September. Here's a buck my boys named Spyder, he's a great buck that we've been getting regular pictures of since early July.....he's definitely 1a on the hit list for me. Good luck to anyone else going out this weekend, I'm guessing we're going to see quite a few deer hit the ground with the weather in the Midwest this weekend.
Great bucks you've got there! Good luck this weekend. With the front moving through today, high pressure moving in tomorrow through Sunday along with cold temps we should see a few big ones start to drop. Saturday morning I plan to be tucked into a nice buck buck bedding area that was torn up with sign when I scouted it in the spring. We haven't hunted this farm at all yet so the deer should be relatively unpressured still. With a little luck I just may see a whitetail worth taking a poke at.
Great bucks bud, good luck this weekend!!! I'm leaving today after work, can't wait! Good lucks fellas, like Justin I too am also jacked about this temp drop and pressure change! Hopefully one of us can catch up with one!!!
I'm going out tomorrow morning. My dad will be filming. I highly doubt I'll see a buck worth shooting. More so just hoping to see some movement and maybe get a crack at a doe. Good luck guys.
Good luck y'all today and as the cold front pushes through. I won't be able to hunt till next week, out in Albuquerque till Sunday evening. I wish y'all the best of luck!!!
No deer yet but man it feels good to be back in a tree stand. Now I just need one of the big boys to walk by me.
Good luck to you guys. I'm starting to get the itch again and I want to get back out in the next couple of weeks.
