Looks like u experince the Lull then. I belive in it but I have strong feelings that location has to do with whether people experince it or not. What type of sources you have in your area, what kind of deer population/ age structure you have.
Some call it a lull and it is true that there is a lull when it comes to action around the stand . IMO though , the full moon cause a change in the action every month but most hunters only notice it in October . Come November the full moon will not have much affect on deer movement because of the rut and in December you'll have the second rut that will keep most deer active but the rest of the year is life as normal .
Great message Ty. So far things have been great with this team and one of the most active ones I have been apart of. Quick update on how things will be going for me. Tomorrow morning I will be heading down to Ohio. I plan to be in a stand tomorrow evening and also hunt both sits on Saturday and Sunday. The past two evenings my buddy and his friend have knocked down 2 mature Ohio bucks bumping does around. There are a few beast down there and still undecided if I am going to wait for them. Its going to come down to the moment on how the footage is leading up to the shot. Starting October 30th I will be starting my ll days of vaction and will be hunting my lease really hard with putting in all days sits almost every day. Right now I am pretty much dead set on Turkey foot or no deer but again will see how everything is leading up to the shot. I have been dabbing into a public land spot and have had some great sits out there so far this year. The one buck i had a encounter with a coulple weeks back is now all busted up on the one good side he had so I dont think I will shoot him any more. I know there should be a few other good bucks in that area so I will wait and see what the camera tells me. I dont want to jinx myself but the way things are lining up there is a possibility I could fill all 3 of my buck tags this year. If I am still without a deer come later in November I will be taking the first good shot I have on a doe. Good luck to everyone and make sure to wear your saftey harness when you are in the stand we owe it to our loved ones
Awesome message Ty. I will be hitting the spot where I found that scrape a couple weeks ago, on Saturday afternoon. I will be taking my climber with me this time so I won't be on the ground. I sure hope the buck that made the scrape is checking it in the evening hours during light.
Awesome message Ty , would be nice to get some updates from the missing team members I've spent the last couple of days getting some stuff ready for a disabled archery hunt (not going just sending my pickup , UTV , and some blinds for my brother who will help guide them) and just finished getting the last of it loaded . Next on my list is our upcoming youth firearms season , gotta figure out where my daughter will shoot a buck at this year and only got 8 days left to get it done . I'll probably sit a few stands and see if I can get another doe for the freezer while I'm at it . Good luck to all !!
My uncle is on his way to Kansas right now from PA. He usually goes every year and does the DIY public land thing during archery for a week long trip. I plan on going with him in the next few years.
Yeah I just realized that bloodrunner13 has been ultra quiet...hopefully that is due to him dragging a booner and a doe out at the same time.
Juvenile hunt is this weekend, but i'm Monday and Tuesday. Which Monday goes back to regular Archery season. So I'll be in the woods both those days. On another note, I was talking to the Game Warden who is a friend of mine today. I work in a place called Fairfield Glade. It's a basically a good size retirement community, about 8,000 homes. I'm a System Tech for Comcast. Anyway, The place is filled with deer....I mean LOTS of deer...lol. No hunting at all. I found out there is a WMA area right next to it...lol. Kinda sad that I never knew it was there.... It's 58,000 acres that is not pressured according to him. Not a lot of people hunt there cause it don't have easy access. Going by what Jason said, there is lots of good deer there. Going to go check it out tomorrow.
That sounds like it could turn out to be a sweet spot if he's saying there's not much pressure there. 58k acres is a pretty big chunk to not know it was there. Get in there. Good luck and keep us updated.
Hey guys, sorry I haven't been more active. I haven't been hunting since our opening weekend. I'm really committed to holding out for another buck at least as big as the one I already tagged, and the other deer I had pinned for early season patterns are all 3 y/o 130ish range deer. I've been keeping the wife happy on the homefront until things start to warm up for the rut due to this. I was going to try and get out this weekend and shoot a doe, but to be honest with this crap weather pattern ahead of us I think I'm going to stay home and keep my wife happy. 15 day weather outlook shows a pretty significant cold front the following weekend (11/1) and I'll be headed out that weekend to see if one of the better bucks on the neighboring properties strolls past. I'm also planning a 9 day trip the week of 11/9 as well, so between those stretches I'm hopeful to get a chance to make lighting strike twice in the same season. I'm 99% confident I'll be able to put a doe down for the team, but to be honest I might wait until late season. There are too many good bucks on the property I'm hunting to waste an early November hunt on a doe, I've got a killer brassica plot that has only been hunted once so far and I'm pretty confident once the corn comes down I should be able to kill a doe in that plot just about any night I want. Good luck to everyone else, if we can manage to get a few more does and a few more good bucks we really might have a chance at winning this thing!
Up in the climber on public land. Sitting over the fresh scrape I found a couple weeks ago. It looks like it hasn't been checked in a while but I threw some buck piss in it so hopefully he will smell that and want to come check it.
Helllllo team!!! sorry i haven't been active much, been so busy.. you guys have been slaying some awesome deer, congrats to everyone! May seem like i went MIA but my MA opening day wasn't until monday (oct 20th) opening morning i went out and jumped a small 6 and 3 does right at my stand. rest of the week was rained out till last night didn't see anything but a nice fox both nights. ill be back in stand monday and hope to have one down soon for us. Decent 8s on camera and one giant. I will be more active on the forum now the season is under way. Gunna try and catch up on the 45 pages i missed while in stand this coming week lol
Well Ohio was a bust for me this past weekend. Warm weather had them pinned down. Finally yesterday morning and evening I was able to see a few does. My buddy sat up at the barn where he can pretty much see the whole farm and seen 3 good bucks and one giant yesterday, Of corse one of them went by a stand last evening that I sat in the morning. Not sure when I will be back down there. He will be hunting Kentucky hard once there gun season opens up on the 8th until he taggs out. So once he knocks a buck down I will be planning a trip down there. Only three days of work for me this week then I am hitting the grind stone for 11 days out at the lease. So far the only Mature bucks that have showed up on camera are turkey foot and Machete. I am pretty sure there are at least 1 or 2 more out there they have just been avoiding the cameras like Machete was for the past 3 months.
Well, some updates. Went to check the public land...man was I off...lol. I guess I misunderstood the size, or heard him wrong. It's not 58k, it's 5k, but was just as good...lol. I walked around for hours. Jumped about 5 deer. No easy access, but I think it will be good hunting. On another note. Went this morning at the house. They cut the corn this past Friday. Wow! Too bad it wasn't rifle season...lol. Seen 9 from my stand. 6 doe, two spikes and nice 8 point. The 8 gave me a broadside shot at 41 yards. The closed he got to my stand, but didn't draw back on him. Was afraid the two does under me would see and bust me. Kinda sad, but was a good morning and nice watching them. Could of shot one of the does under me, but didn't want to with 8 point in field. Hopefully he will back in the morning.
Got access this weekend to a sweet little 6 acre suburban spot that is only 3 acres from my house thanks to racewayking! Hunted it yesterday morning, walked the entire lot, and also hung a stand. There area couple of resident doe family groups that live there and the top of the ridge has a couple of really nice funnels that I can see a buck trolling through when they start covering ground in the next week or so. I'm heading out this upcoming weekend to start hitting it hard again. I have something like 12 days scheduled to be on my lease out in the west part of the state, so I'm really anxious to see if I can get it done again!
Its nice to have a nice little spot by your house. I have about a 150 yards to walk in the woods. Its nice buddy
Boy you aren't kidding. Since I graduated high school 15 years ago, my closest hunting properties have all been 1-4 hour drives from home. It's awfully nice to tell the wife your going hunting for the morning and be home by 10am.
Yea we have a property that is 2 1/2 hours away that is really nice but the drive I hate. At my house I have 8-9 arces which isn't a lot but its to wake up a hour before you need to for sure buddy
