Well here are the two bucks that I had a encounter with last night in Ohio. Things happened quick and I was not a 100% confident with trying to film and time a shot in between corn rows. Season just started and I will have plenty of time to make it back down.
The first time I had a deflection like that , I was shooting Carbon Express Maxima Hunters out of an 80# Hoyt V-Tech . This time I guess it wouldn't really be an arrow as I had to start using a crossbow last year . Not sure what kind of bolts they are , they came with the crossbow . Sorry for any confusion, I've been saying arrows for 39 years now . I've really started wondering if the age of the bucks could have anything to do with it . I know cutting through the rib cage of an older buck is a lot tougher than a younger deer and both times I've had this happen , it's been on 6.5 + year old bucks . Would there ribs be tough enough to help cause the problem ?
I wouldnt think so. Thats why I was wondering what your set up is cause you really wanna have something that is going to pack a punch.
I know that the first time this happened to me , my KE was extremely high due to the heavier arrows required to shoot a bow at 80lbs but will admit that this time I don't know much about my setup . I pretty much bought a package deal and went with it hoping that I wouldn't have it very long .
Just curious as to which Muzzys you were shooting JLS? I haven't heard of deflection issues with Muzzys but one thing is for sure when hunting, ANYTHING is possible!! I'm glad you jumped him and he seems to be in good health considering.
I've shot old version 3 blade 100gr for a lot of years . They've sure killed a lot of deer for me but this is kind of stuff is getting old . I know it's only my second time of having a problem and maybe it could have happened with any head but I'm gonna change to something . Been hearing a lot of good stuff about the mechanicals here lately anyway .
Yeah definitely odd to have happened to you twice. If you are thinking of going the mechanical route, take a look into Swhackers. They have a great design and I'm a big fan of their blade deployment method. Pretty much impossible to have a failure to deploy by the way they are designed. Also in the extremely unlikely event they didn't deploy the other blades are sharpened so it's like shooting a 1" 2 blade. But like I said their design pretty much guarantees they'll open. Just a suggestion.
I got out last week and passed on a couple bucks. The best one was a younger 4x4. I take off the week before rifle season and bow hunt all during rifle season so I will have plenty more opportunities.
I have kind of been MIA for the past week. I hunted opening morning 9/15 and didn't see anything which is very uncommon for the stand I was in. So I decided to stay away until the river goes down and things get back to normal. Going to be back out this weekend with the cold front that's coming. Had to move all my cameras to high ground haven't checked them in a few weeks. I did have a new shooter show up though. View attachment 52073
Bootlegger is gonna have 50points to add to our score fellas!!! :D He shot a young broken sided buck last night to donate to his local church (does this yearly) so we are adding some points. Congrats bud, just hope you remember two pics!
Yep, got him posted up with two pics. I will say it's the longest shot I remember taking on deer with a bow. It was 38 yards, broadside. It was a pass through double lung shot. It was the first deer with my new Hoyt Faktor 30. My 100gr. 2" Swhacker eat him up...lol. He made it about 40 yards I guess. I killed it at my house from a stand I call Rivers Edge, It was in the woods. Most of the shots are 25 yards at best, but he was in the only shooting lane I have that is about 45 yards long I clear out. I could have shoot a Doe this morning, but passed cause for some reason a lot of the does on my land have left...only got a handful and wanna keep them around. I do have a bunch of spikes, & 4 points though.
