Just curious have you had good luck in the past doing that and have you ever had one that ends up being a year round sign post ?

Haven't really messed with them much but have started a couple that seemed to get hit a lot in the over night hours .

    Talking scrapes?

I have had awesome luck with over-marking active scrapes or communal scraps as well as making mock scrapes over the years. I myself personally only use frozen urine that is the freshest I can get (am in need of a new company though as the old one I used to rep for are well idiots now) or if not urine I alot of times let the deer do the urine and use with Smokies Per-orbital gland or Buck Fever Synthetics Forehead Gland scent on overhead licking branches. If a mock scrape just a stick will do in roughing up the ground (always carry the stick far away unless using gloves).

I actually just did 3 mock scrapes this past weekend at spots where they scrape every year so kinda a over marking but also a mock because they haven't hit them yet on the ground wise...they have been licking the branches. The other one is a true communal scrape which is visited year round and I applied some gland to licking branches and roughed up the ground a touch...

....may be pulling a camera or two with a couple of them infront of them this weekend (I know short pull but gotta be in the area anyways so may do quick pull).

    Thanks Ty !!

Hunters around here that were used to using mineral sites to set there cameras on got a little disappointed when mineral sites were taken away (CWD containment zone) . I had recommended to some of them , to just start a scrape but really couldn't give them any advice on the use of scrapes .

Just 1 more ? , would you recommend them as a suitable place to set a camera ?

I am gonna freshen up the same scrape I used last year. It was from a natural deer made scrape and gets a good bit of action. I have quite a few pics of it being scoped out last season. Hopefully it draws the same attention this season.

That is a tough question...I wrote a Insider Article on scrapes but in an effort to protect the guys that paid I won't share it but I will touch on the camera question.

Placing cameras on scraps is something I love to do...that said sometimes you HAVE TO BE WILLING to let them sit and soak for a lot longer than normal. We are blessed that this community scrape I described is seriously only about 40 yards behind a neighbor's barn which he lets us hunt. If it wasn't for that short quick access I probably wouldn't check the camera more than once a month...unless in season and hunting it or raining (love checking cams in rain). That scrape is honestly right in between two bedding areas and about 120 yards from our "biggest" small food plot so it is a great traffic spot and just the last couple years we figured out how awesome scrape shots can be on camera and how much inventory of bucks can be taken by utilizing them. I strongly suggest though never walking in them or kneeling and even letting a knee touch the ground around them...only boots and even then I will lean over scrape as much as possible to apply scent to licking branches or ground if using urine. I don't like to get oober aggressive with distance of camera to scrape...some guys get awesome up close shots but I am too leary to get too close so my normal distance is atleast 10 feet away. Below is a shot just taken this year on the very scrape I am describing:

Captain...I'd go ahead and send bloodrunner a pm about checking in...also in each person profile you can click on email them. I would always pm first....wait awhile and then last resort send an email.

Thanks for sharing what you could, that's some great info Ty !

My fears of educating deer keeps me from running a camera at all . I know they can be set away from stands to take inventory and have a little off season fun but I don't want them to know anything is up until it's to late . I'm kind of OCD about not stepping foot on the properties until I'm hunting and sometimes even think that parking 3-400 yards away from them to take inventory is to much .

I'll definitely give some thought to starting a couple more scrapes this year . I'll put a little more effort into keeping them fresh and using a little better quality scents . We'll see what I learn this year .... that's actually my #1 goal every year , to learn something new .

The day any of us lose the desire to do this...is the day we all need to sell our hunting clothes, bows and stands. :) In my opinion that is of course.

Yeah just bring up profile and you'll find it on the left side beneath avatar if memory serves. I I remember right though not everyone has it as an option.

You and me both brotha !! Knowledge is everything in the deer woods . To me , it's where confidence begins . Once you start feeling that you understand why deer do some of the things that they do , it gives you the upper hand ..... even if only in your mind .

I've been doing this a long time and I think I know a lot but there's a lot left to learn .

The first doe I harvested last season was on her way to check the scrape I was tending. I set my stand only about 20 yards from it and I had pics of does going into it just about every morning. She followed the script and offered me a 12 yard shot on her way to it.

Well I'm out of here for a couple of days ..... daughters wedding .

The wife did get a room with free WiFi so if I find time I'll check in .

Got to admit that I'll never understand the mind of a shopaholic .... she got free WiFi but that room cost twice as much as other rooms and I'm pretty sure that WiFi comes with about every room by now :bash: Oh well , I know when to pick my battles and now ain't the time
