I have head that deer absolutely love japanese honeysuckle. But its also an invasive species. Im thinking about planting some since it lasts long into winter and its thick (great for all wildlife). Who has any experience with this plant? Thanks.
i probably wouldnt go that route, its an invasive so theres no stopping it. It chokes out native vegetation and trees and there are better options out there.
I too want to know some honest alternatives to honesysuckle...I've researched and researched and built a huge list of great bushes, vines, shrubs, trees and native grasses but nothing seems to do the ticket for deer like honeysuckle....anyone?
DO NOT plant honeysuckle!!!! It is a non-native species that will eventually take over the entire woods, your neighbor's property, everywhere a bird can crap its seeds. That stuff is ruining Ohio's woodlands so badly that the DNR is paying people to clear their properties of it. That would like stocking the river with asian carp... just a bad, bad idea.
if its going to be in the open, you really cant go wrong with planting your native grasses.... indian grass, switch grass, big and little blue stem. they provide excellent cover, and the forbes mixed in are as good as any high dollar food plot you could ever plant.
