So I was wondering if anyone out there makes their own targets, and how you go about it? Please post some pictures if you do. When I get excited I tend to make stuff, I made a target a few weeks back and a stand to hang my bow and hold arrows while I am in the yard. Here is the target I made, I have a 8 month old, so I took a empty diaper box, and cut out 2 inch think pieces of closed cell foam that fit snug into the box. Once is was full I taped it up tight and gave a it a quick spray paint job. Its about 12 inches thick, no arrows sticking out the back at all. I was pretty happy considering it was free. I know the cardboard will get beat up, but i can cut a new piece for the front in five minutes. I did not think about taking pictures of the making of it, but it was straight forward enough.
Here is the stand. I used just some material I had in my shop. The pipe I bought. I made it so you could have one person on each side, it stands up on its own so no sticking it in the ground and it weighs about ten pounds, so its easy to move. I don't really like leaving stuff out here because it rains a lot in the winter. The only thing I might change is adding some padding material to the top side of the wood I hang my bow on, but it is pine and it pretty soft wood. By no means is this fancy. But neither am I. Sorry it keeps posting my pictures side ways. not sure how to change that.
An idea borrowed from Chester state park in SC...build a wood frame (I used some scrap 2x10) cover the back with chicken wire. Fill with scrap fabric or cardboard (easily recycled when worn out). Cover the front with more chicken wire. NOTE: NOT FOR BROADHEADS! -Bill
I made one out of old carpet, an I framed it out of 2x12s. Works great an arrows come out super easy!
Here is a link to the ones I make. Scroll down and you will see how I make them. http://forums.bowhunting.com/bowhunting-talk/48925-thinking-making-my-own-target-any-ideas.html
I have had this one 1 1/2 years, and just replaced the facing 6 months ago. I do recommend to use triple layer of facing so you won't have to replace so fast. But that being said there are 4 of us using this target outside. Plus I use it for supertuning customers bows. The clothes are old ones we had laying around I do recommend you to remove all zippers and buttons. As far as how long these will last many many years. 10 to 20. I have one in the basement that is 8 to 9 years old and is fine but changing the facing. Tips on getting things for this lumber covers for facings and stuffing-(free) home depot, lumber mills Coats, jackets, pants, dressings- goodwill, family donations, yard sales plastic signs- Coca Cola, Pepsi (they throw them away)
I do the same thing but i use old clothing, blankets and pillows and stuff as much as it will allow with out busting the seams. Then tape up the seams, spray 3-4 dots and have at it. it has well over 200 shots and not one pass thru and still can take everything i shoot at it. my buddy shoots his Excalibur equinox into and it doesnt even move and not one pass thru lol (Field points only)
I use a heavy duty garbage bag inside a burlap sac, and stuff it full of old clothes. I then slide a piece of thick cardboard In between the clothes and the garbage bag for a flatter/larger shooting surface. Then I just sew the top up with braided fishing line. I have used the same bag for thousands of arrows and its still great. The arrows pull out with no effort, and the best part is. Its dirt cheap to make. Don't forget to remove any zippers, metal buttons, etc.
I made my target out of a cardboard box, Strapping, Buna Rubber, Fabric. I took a cardboard box and filled it with a ton of fabrics and grocery bags, every 12" I have a piece of Buna rubber slotted in to help hold the arrow in the target. I then glued another piece of rubber to the front of the target and painted the dots on. Took strapping around the outside and BAM, Target made for less then Free! Helps that I had all the stuff laying around
