I know some of you mix up your own minerals, but am too lazy to search the threads for the recipes.

We have been using Trophy Rocks with great success in Ontario, but I want to put out a bunch more sites this next summer to get pics and don't want to break the bank buying Trophy Rocks. The only thing is, I'm a little hesitant using anything else, because they work so good.

These pics were of the second rock put out on this site.

Where legal. :D I have used.

    1 part--Dicalcium Phosphate
    1 part--Stock Salt
    2 parts--Trace Minerals

with excellent results. But they didn't like on one farm I placed it on. Never touched it. Others have a bath tub sized hole dug where it was placed.

That's what I'm afraid of. My dad picked something up at a feed store on the way to camp one day and they wouldn't touch the stuff. Don't remember exactly what it was though.

Its pretty cheap tho Dan. You can make 200 pounds for under $40 last time I picked it up I think. Maybe you could mix up a small batch and try it first.

Put a small piece of the Trophy Rock there too to get them to try it. Then just replace it with the mix. I think in your established sites you won't have a problem. It just may take a little effort to get them started on it. Mix in a little corn too.

I'll definitely try it. Probably also use some Trophy Rocks. Starting 20-30 sites would be a lot cheaper this way!

This is what I use also. last year was the first year, and they seemed to like it. I have heard that if you use the same spots the second year, they really hit them hard the second year.

I have a question about the home-made mixes. Do you just dump the mix in a spot one time then leave it alone the rest of the year? Or do you keep re-dumping the mix throughout the year?

I made 3 spots last year, and I put it out a total of 3 times. About once a month or so.

If you are having problems with deer taking to your mineral spot I suggest mixing in a 50 lb bag of dried molasses. They can't resist. I use everything listed before (dicalcium, stock, mineral) but add the molasses to really get it going.
