It all depends on your local laws. I've heard that in IL you can use mineral blocks as long as they aren't anywhere near a stand and they have to be removed 2 weeks prior to October 1st? Not sure if it’s true and I’m not sure I care. I've never used them because of there just not for me personally. You can try all sorts of stuff to attract deer. Right now at this junction of the year Water would be an effective attractant. I'm going to buy some yard pond rubber and make several water holes near my stands and plots. They won't fill up anytime soon, but when they do it should be worth the effort. I've hear people say that Corn will be them in like nothing other.

X2 brings them in every time. Last season I wanted to take out some does so I used corn a few times with vanilla. First time I put 40lb out on Monday thinking I would be good to go come Saturday. Corn was gone! Next time I tried it, I put it out Wed. Gone Saturday again. The last time I tried it, put it out Thursday. Gone before the sun came up on Saturday. I quit using it. It cost too much last season.

Had a bunch of raccoons in it but never actually witnessed a deer enjoying it. I bet I used 5 gallons of the stuff one season in a high deer populated area. I did have good prints around some licks I made but didn't actually see any deer with my on two eyes.

Somebody had a similar thread in the Introductions forum. Its been close to 100+ here for about 2 weeks. Last night in my backyard buffet they had the following on the menu: veg garden, fruit trees, blue&black berries, lawn, birdseed, mineral block, corn, water, Peanut butter (smeared on a tree trunc) and vanilla (also on a tree)+ plenty of other trees/bushes/etc (Note there are no standing corn or beans within 1 mile of me, but there is pasture and hay fields; nearest water is 1/2 mile as the crow flies). Corn and Water were the favorites with minerals and PB hit by 3 and 2 does respectively. 10 deer and yearlings (an update from the other thread) before I called it a night. The bucks are roaming after 11pm and before dawn - I usually won't see them much in the yard till mid/late Aug.

I think deer are somewhat like us, only in so much as, they do favor a bit of variety from whatever is normal diet for them. If its all corn around you, try apples, beans or PB; grain/grass fields corn (or vanilla corn/apple corn) might be just the ticket. Your mileage may vary and this is based on my experience with my backyard 'herd'. All deer need water and love the minerals/salt/sweets (like molasses, or sugar beets).

X3... smearing peanut butter on tree trunks. The peanut butter gets licked off quickly but the oil soaks in and will attract deer for a while.
