Hogg It Report Four years ago I returned to archery from a fifteen year archery hiatus I discovered the world had changed dramatically. Carbon composite technology, single cams, parallel limbs, drop away rests and fiber optic illuminated sights were all technologies I had to research and learn about. Cruising the internet (it wasn’t even a word when last I practiced the “World’s Oldest Sport”) provided input on every subject. I practiced with my old equipment, built my body and knowledge and then began assembling a modern shooting system. After using old style pins sights from two different manufacturers, I settled on what I believed to be a fiber optic sight of high quality fitting my requirements. I wanted to be able to easily remove the sight for damage free transportation, fiber optic pins, easy adjustability and the option of adding an accessory pin light. The third sight I purchased came with a light included in the purchase price. Please keep in mind I was operating on a limited budget so unlimited spending was out of the question. Price was a bitter pill but note I was now on my third sighting system. I received my newest sight and began using the device. As time progressed and my skill level improved, I noticed my right/left impact point was changing at different ranges. I would get zeroed in at forty yards and then be way off to one side at ten. Eventually, I discovered a manufacturing flaw in the dove tail tolerances and the adjustments provided on the housing would not compensate for the “slop” even though there was a level in the housing. I contacted the factory and explained my problem. They acknowledged the issue and said they had improved the design and set me a new mounting assembly…all to no avail. I had seen Spot Hogg’s advertisements and literature on the net and in catalogs but had always been frightened away by the apparent “high” cost of their Hogg It sight. True, it had all of the things I wanted but to date the cost had seemed prohibitive. One of the things I kept reading was how “It’s the last sight you’ll ever have to buy” and frankly, I had already spent the sum on the previous three sights I had already found inadequate. It was the addition of the .010 diameter pins to Spot Hogg’s catalog that finally tipped the scales for me as I had found while practicing at fifty yards my .019 pins obscured the white center of the twenty yard target I was using. I ordered my Hogg It sight with seven, .010 pins, a wrap kit (fiber optic enhancement) and quick release knob through the excellent and competitive Two Morrows Supply Company. http://twomorrowssupply.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT I received the new sight and following the included instructions installed my new Hogg It at a local archery supply. Interestingly, I was able to instruct the resident technician on the benefits of leveling in the second and third axis planes (he was unaware of the terms or the implications of ignoring the adjustments). I hastily beat a retreat to my private range. It has now been two years since I installed my Hogg It. I did wind up installing the longer, nine inch extension sight rail so I could more easily see the entire sight housing in my already large peep. Other than that one change and the addition of a home made shade for shadowing the pins from direct sunlight from both the front and rear, I have found my Hogg It to have all the advertised features and more: 1: easy individual pin adjustment for both elevation and windage 2: easy housing gang adjustment for both elevation and windage 3: easy, solid adjustments for both second and third axis 4: bright fiber optic enhanced pins in low light conditions 5: three position adjustable pin light that actually works and does not fall apart 6: all adjustments have remained unchanged through temperature changes and vibration 7: all adjustments are REPEATABLE…in other words, if you change an adjustment, you can return to the beginning place with no difficulty and making incremental changes are predictable. In many respects I liken this to adjusting my Leupold rifle scopes. I know where it was and I know where it will go after making an adjustment and I know it won’t change on its own. 8: graveyard quiet I can’t praise Spot Hogg enough for this excellent product! My bow now sports Spot Hogg products all the way around. It has the Hogg It sight, the Whammy rest and a B-Stinger stabilizer. I even have the buckle strapped Wise Guy release. Maybe when they begin producing a compound bow, I’ll just move everything over. I see now they are offering a range finder accessory that will probably find its way onto my bow. Now I’m not so sure about the claim about never buying another sight as I can’t help but fantasize about getting a Hogg Father, wrapped, single pin free style sight to play with. I just can’t figure a way to clear it with my Chief Financial Officer. Spot Hogg has excellent products and customer service. You won’t be sorry, I promise. Spot Hogg, keep up the good work!
Good to hear mate. It has been one of them things I have been tossing up wether to get or not as the price is not so attractive. a few people at the local archery club have them & boy do they look good!
Like I said, by the time I finally bit the bullet, I had already bought three other sights and had eventually become frustrated with them for numerous reasons. After all, a fellow can live with one fault or maybe even two but those issues continually haunted me and my frustration levels continued to mount. If I had continued on the same path, I would now be at five different sights. You do the math. I can no longer blame crappy groups on lousy sight problems. Now I have to blame it on my lousy optometrist (Are you sure these are the right prescription lens?...Honey, I think I need the lens for this Hogg It sight, I think I’m going blind.), lighting (Oh, the sun was in my eyes!) or my incessant grip torque (I can blame most of that on the bow manufacturer…right?). There may be other manufacturers with comparable equipment on the market but Spot Hogg is “Number One” with me. The folks there are actually archers and hunters and have a personal stake in the success of the company. My problem now is: How do I tell my wife (You know, the Chief Financial Officer.) that I really would like to get my hands on the Hogg Father…just for the range and for fun? The upside is I could leave the dove-tail mount in place and easily switch between the two sight platforms, once adjusted. PS The last sight I had before throwing in the towel was the Apex Nitrous dove-tail mount by TruGlow.
I too had a apex nitrous sight & thought it was great & my groups wer amazing, however it was very very heavy, the knob that secures the extention arm would not hold it tight enough & would come loose while shooting making it quite noisy. dont have to much of a problem with trugo but there pins are not that great, but then again for $80 I suppose you can't expect to much. Might bite the bullet & get a hog-it soon as I have no doubt there worth it in the long run.
