Shot a decent buck tonight. Perfect 20 yd shot oppurtunity. Saw him coming down the trail from about 50 yds out. I drew back before he got to my shooting lane and waited til he got there and should have grunted with my mouth to stop him, but I didn't. He was moving along slow and he was stopped and just as i pulled trigger on the release he stepped forward and hit him a little back. I think I got liver, the arrow had some white hair on it that had to be from the exit side and I saw the entrance wound as he ran away and hit wasn't too low. I was up probably 25-30 ft above him. No bubbles in the blood and arrow doesn't smell like guts. Tracked him for about a 100yds with the help of my dad and 5 yr old nephew (he's quite the tracker) and ran out of blood. Backed out and will be back in the morning.
good luck in the am hopefully you find him. You did the right thing by backing out, with a liver shot i would have just got down from my stand headed home and go back in the morning so hopefully he won't be far and you will find him
Hope you can track him down, nothing worse than a uncovered deer. Only thing you can do, find him or not, is learn!
Well after not sleeping so well last night, it's gonna be light in about a half hr and time to get back after that deer. The reason I started tracking last night is for a few reasons. 1) it was raining a little bit 2) I already lost a doe to coyotes earlier in the yr and they are thick around here 3) I truly felt like the shot wasn't so far back that all I got was guts and add that up with the other two reasons and I thought the best idea was to start tracking last night. I've hit the liver on other deer and always found no more than a 150 yds away. I believe that deer was dead last night while we were looking for it. If we can't find it with our own eyes I'm taking my dog back out and gonna see what her nose can do. I'll give an update hopefully sooner than later.
Thanks fellas! Found him! It was the toughest track job I've ever had to do. It ended up being a gut shot. I screwed up, but thankfully we found him. There was a little ground shrinkage. Lol. Either way I feel a ton better after we found him. My first year hunting solely public ground around home and I'm happy to have some venison in the freezer. Gonna start cutting him up now. I'll try to post a pic. I've never done it before on here.
Finally, one of these stories that turns out positive!!!!! When in doubt... wait it out. If I don't see blood spray within the first few yards. I make the assumption it was a marginal hit and back out. I am so glad you stopped when you did. Congrats... nice buck.
Here ya go bud, flipped it over for you and reposted it. Nice deer, good job and great job on the recovery....congratulations!
