Just wondering how people approach hunting days when the winds are 15-20mph or if you go at all. Do deer move any different on windier days?
I don't get in a tree if its too windy. Try to hunt low spots out of the wind. Good days to still hunt in a ghilli suit from the ground. If its really blowing I stay out of the woods. Falling branches are dangerous.
I know around KY when the wind is howling, the deer don't hardly move at all. It's almost like wasting your time going out to hunt. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
You can't kill em from the couch so I do hunt on windy days here in Kansas but my approach usually changes. Instead of sitting a field edge or more open terrain ill get down in one of my sets in a sheltered creek bottom near bedding. I tend see more deer hunting these protected areas during windy days than I do in some of my edge sets. Just remember to keep the wind in your favor. On windy days your stink will just hit their nose faster if you're not careful.
I always head for cedar thickets, the deer around here really gravitate towards them to get out of the wind. I got a double with does last year during 25-30mph doing this.
I hunt the food sources very close to the bedding....killed a buck two seasons back in a day it was whipping with 35mph gusts....I'll admit I held on to the tree in the afternoon a couple times.
I guess I will hunt my stand that is in a big ravine. The wind is supposed to be in my favor but will be around 15-20mph.
Never have too much luck on high wind days.. At home its a toss up if I hunt very windy days.. Out of state, I will hunt.. Usually only have a couple days to get things done. Good luck!
I didn't think I would have any luck in high winds. Almost stayed home one day last year in 25mph winds, with gusts to 35. Decided to hunt a small (@10 acre) patch of timber bordering pasture land. Just after sunup, saw the biggest 8 point I have seen with a bow in my hand, and shot him. As was said earlier, you can't kill them from the couch.
I'll sit in the blind if its too windy. Nothing like a good "tree-ride" in 20+ winds to get the pucker factor up.
Besides be very careful about your scent. What kind of plan do you have when you go in the woods with high winds like where are you going to hunt and what time morning/evening
The deer around here are a lot more skittish in the wind. This time of year the acorns are dropping like flies and I think that the deer don't like it.
The first few days I went out this season here in NH the winds were 15-25mph. I was hunting from the ground on the edge of a field, I saw 3 deer the first day and 6 the second day, now that the winds died down, I've seen the 1-3 deer per day.
35 to 40 and a down pour. Standing in the stand holding on to the riffle rest and surfing USA. Welcome to New England
