Hi guys I'm from the UK and yes I know, its illegal to bow hunt here but that doesn't stop me from eating, sleeping and breathing it so thats why I'm on here trying to find someone who can point me in the right direction of finding some Turkey or hog hunting. I know there are outfitters out there that can put me in a high seat or something but I'm really more interested in meeting some local boys who know their stuff and wouldnt mind helping a 'limey' learn their art. I'm looking at leasing some land but as a foreigner its a bit of a nightmare so any helpful advice would be gratefully received.
    Thanks
    Steve

Hi WillO and thanks for your reply, I'm in East Sussex, how are you finding it out there? I thought about coming out for a year and renting a cabin or something, in your opinion would that be a good thing to do? If not then how do you recommend I get into the bow hunting scene in the USA? If it's not rude to ask, how did you get started?

Renting a cabin is always a winner! I have one in Georgia I spend a lot of time in. I live in Florida so its a nice 10 hour drive but worth it!

I take it you already have a bow and equipment etc and your a competent shot? If so then maybe plan a trip for a couple of weeks, bring you r equipment over and hook up with an outfitter catering to what you want to hunt.

I have a private lease but I also hunt public land

I got into it a while ago, I have rifle hunted on the family farm since the age of 6 (31 now)

I'm not into rifle hunting anymore, I love bow hunting and everything about it and immerse myself completely in the addiction!

    Welcome to the sickness:)

You might want to come over for a holiday and hunt a week or two for whatever animal is in season. FL & TX hogs are year round.

Thanks for that WillO, I'm a retired gamekeeper and have shot with rifles and shotguns all my life but I have become obsessed with the idea of bow hunting, I'm a complete novice of course but I have an Infinite Edge bow, its difficult to get good quality hunting accessories over here so I tend to use American companies and have things like broad heads etc sent over. The trouble is I'm 'all dressed up with nowhere to go' which is why I was hoping to meet some guys on here that could lend a hand. I'm really interested in renting a cabin and land as you have done, could you tell me where I could start looking and how to begin the process?

Definitly for your first trip go to an outfitter. Try one in Florida or Texas for hog hunting, that way you can go at any time of the year and also it’s generally a lot cheaper than Deer etc. that’s what I’d reccomend just to get your first experience of it all.

Thanks for that and I have contacted a company called Cutter Creek Outfitters for some hog hunting and are waiting for them to respond to my enquiry, I dont suppose you have any dealings with this outfit or could recommend a good outfitter for me?
    Thanks

Iv never heard of them perhaps others have. Personally I wouldn't go to a fenced hunting place, that's what we call a "canned hunt", I'm all about the fair chase, but each to their own.

I have used this website a couple of times for out of state vacations, most offer accommodation and a fully inclusive package. I have a whitetail hunt booked for January in Alabama:

Thanks mate I'll give that site a look, totally agree about the fenced hunting, only interested in fair hunts and will not consider anything else, or whats the point? On another note, I popped into my local archery shop last week and spotted this little, 50lb draw, take down recurve hunter, a really cheap Chinese import, in fact I think the thing cost me £60 GSD so cheap as chips. Anyway, I bought it and a dozen cheap arrows just for fun really but I have to say the quality is amazing and it's flat and it's fast. The upshot is that i'm thinking of buying a good quality version of this bow and using it for hunting purposes as I love the simplicity of it but is there:
    A. A legal requirement of bow draw weight in order to hunt in Florida or anywhere in the US and
    B. Would you yourself consider such a bow as being a capable and serious hunting bow?
Sorry for yet more questions mate!
    Steve

Hi Phil and thanks for your message, yes I would definitely like to know more about the bow hunting opportunities in Canada as its one of the hunting destinations on my list. Can you recommend a way for me to get started over there? Do you know of anyone I can contact over there to organise a trip or even a cabin perhaps? One of the difficult things I have found is making the right contacts, it's a big country and when you are trying to start out from scratch it's very daunting when you dont know where or how to start, any help or light you might shed on the situation would be gratefully appreciated.

You could pretty much take all I and others have said in this and other threads and apply that to Canada, it’s really no different mate

    1) Decide what you want to hunt
    2) Pick an outfitter and get booked in (try the website I mentioned)
    3) Book your travel
    4) Write a review on here about the awesome time you had! Lol

    No worries at all!

Legal draw weight in FL is 35lbs currently unless it has changed recently. Not certain about the other states but you can google easily and find out, I would imagine they are all around that though.

Any bow so long as it’s reliable and can shoot an arrow at a decent velocity and have the energy to penetrate sufficiently can be used for hunting..... and obviously you need to be accurate and consistent with it of course!
