Hey all, well I am not sure where to start. I own a few oil leases out here in eastern Kansas, and today when I was walking around on one of them I noticed fresh deer tracks. I thought, man it is almost fall! I havent been hunting since 2006. I was Goose and Rabbit hunting in the fields of eastern Colorado. If anyone has gone bird hunting in easten Colorado it is amazing to see how many ducks and geese migrate. We met someone who worked for the state, and allowed us to have a no limit on geese! The deal was as long as we let them test some birds for bird flu, we could take as many as we liked. Anyway... So back to the deer =) I have always noticed a lot of deer tracks in the area I work. My sweet spot is on a total of 180 acres, with a previously built tree stand at the edge of a woodline to an open field next to a small creek. PERFECT. I thought, you know I have been shooting guns all my life why not give bowhunting a try...more of a challenge in my opinion. When I was around 12-13 years old I had a compound bow, 50lb draw, and would just shoot for fun in the backyard. Never took it hunting or anything like that, but I was good at it I felt. Now I am 30, and I want to take advantage of the land I can use, and the many....many deer and turkey. Landowners, and even a local Sheriff's deputy have all asked if they can hunt because they see so many deer all year round on the land. So, what is the purpose of this post? I wanted to kind of explain the situation so you all can help me with advice. What kind of bow do you all recommend for someone in my situation? I am going to begin looking around soon, and I have a Bass Pro shop less than a mile away from me. I would like a bow I can use to take down whitetail and turkey this fall, and then spring turkey. If I am good I would like to travel down south to hunt boar, and maybe head back out on a trip to Colorado or another mountain region for big game like elk. I heard you can get a LOT of meat off elk. I have never been deer hunting before, just bird. So, some tips would be very welcome! If anyone lives in Kansas let me know how you have fared as well. I would like to get a nice bow, but stay within a reasonable price range for someone new. Maybe this fall if I follow through I will have some photos of a trophy buck to share with everyone.
I think the best advice is to go to the stores and shoot as many bows as you can. Then decide which one just feels right in your hand.
Hey MP, what unit you with? Im a vet, 11B, 2nd I.D. Also, anyone recommend a good inexpensive game cam?
Im attached to an intel unit right now in Korea. 501st For the cams, I would look into the new primos truth cams. Im hearing a lot of good things from them, however they havent been out long enough to have been thoroughly tested. They run anywhere between 100-130 depending on which model you choose.
Welcome to the site. For a trail cam I would recommend getting the bushnell trophy cam if you can spend a little more for it. They have great picture quality and battery life. Also have fast trigger speeds so you don't get many blank pictures. If you go to the trail camera section of these forums you can see what the picture quality is like for most cameras if you wanted to compare. For a bow, do as MP said and go down and try out the bows that bass pro has to offer. The Diamond, Ross and PSE lines all are really good. If you can afford to spend a little more on a bow than try out some of the higher end bows. The cheaper bows will still be able to do anything you want them to, just the higher end bows are usually a little smoother to shoot and most times a little faster which would give you more kinetic energy when it comes to hunting big game animals like elk. Bass pro has some really good deals on bow packages that come with practically everything you need to hunt. For hunting tips there are a bunch of different threads on here that you can read. Also there is a bunch of very knowledgeable people on this site that will be able to answer almost any question you have.
Welcome to all things bowhunting. I'd second the recommendations on the Primos Truth Cam as well as shooting a few bows and go from there. Again, welcome.
Where in Eastern Kansas are you that has a Bass Pro a mile a way? Are you in KC area? I know of the 2 BP's up there. Definitely try out as many bows as you can and find one that looks and, above all, feels good to you. Then the fun of tricking it out with a rest, sight, and all. Then the arrow choices and broadheads! Just starting out is a lot of fun, but would be even better with unlimited funds! Have a blast! Last year was my first year and I still have a ton to learn. Best of luck to you this fall.
Welcome Kansas dude! Feel free to enter in our deer contest above.. its a great way to meet the peeps here.. contest sign-up ends Sunday I think. So hurry!
Welcome to the site. Try the PSE Brute package i just bought it and its great but like they said just see what feels right. The Brute was 529 but you can get it cheaper at bowhunting.com if they have them in stock.
Yep part of the KC metro area. We have two Bass Pro shops in Kansas City, and we also have a Cabelas which is awesome!
