    I live about 20 minutes from WASHington (no R) but my mom puts an R sound into everything. Warshing machince, warsh the dishes, Warshington MO...

    When I learned to spell, they didn't teach me to add extra letters that weren't there.

    The "s" isn't silent... if it wasn't supposed to be pronounced, they wouldn't have put it on there. That's a dead giveaway someone is in serious Yankee territory when they leave it off.

    That's about as bad as saying "Missourah". Blech.
