hey guys this is my second year hunting. 1st year bow hunting. When i practice i shoot at 15 yard and group them really well. I use my uncles matthews sq2 has 400 grain arrows and its at 65 lbs right now. It also has a whisker biscuit and silencers. I missed 5 deer already this year with it lol and im getting frustrated. I practice and practice. It has a pendulum sight which I really dont like. He tells me I need to calm down when I'm out there but I am calm and idk what it is I feel I'm cursed with that bow lol. So my question is should I buy a tru glow sight for the bow and resight it in and maybe practice at 20 yards once sighted in? Or maybe buy myself my own bow and start fresh? I'm looking at PSE, Bear, and Hoyt. I lie matthews but they are to expensive for me. I'd like to spend like 500 or maybe 550 for a bow including sight. I have arrows i might be able to use so I could save money there and I already have a release. Thanks for reading... Also how do you feel on peep sights? He hated his and took it off he said it narrows your view to much and sucks in low light Your thoughts on that to would be much appriciated. Thanks ps my uncle says if im going to buy anything it should be a crossbow but i just feel like bow is so much cooler and I want the challenge
I love peep sights. That may be why you are missing. You may not be anchoring the same and looking at the sight differently. Also are you hunting from a stand? If so when you shoot are you bending at the waist so your shoulders and chest are always the same as when you target shoot. You dont want to just lower you bow arm and shoot standing straight up. Make any sense?
No offense but it sounds like you may need to quit taking advice from your uncle. I've never used a pendulum sight so I really can't comment about that. As far as NOT using a peep sight, what is your point of reference? Many non-peep sight users have some other means of a reference. Personally, I use a peep sight. It does limit you a bit in low-light situations but the positives far outweigh the negatives. I bet if you install a peep you will tighten your groups. Do you practice with the pendulum sight in a hunting situation, i.e. from a treestand? If you were to take a poll, I'd say theres only a few out there that use a pendulum. I'd get a fixed pin sight and a peep and go KILL some deer. Don't worry about a new bow right now. Good luck!
Most new hunters make the same rookie mistake. Most new hunters have the tendency to drop their bow arm to watch the arrow's impact. Remember to hold your form. And just like Soccerdan 90 said, bend at the waist dont lower your bow arm. Keep everything above your waist the same just like you are shooting at a target.
I appreciate your honesty, but if you missed 5 deer, you're just begging to wound an animal. Not cool. Maybe get a new sight and a peep, but do what you gotta do, to be absolutely sure you can hit what you're shooting at before hunting again. Your uncles' vision may not be as good as yours, explaining why he doesn't like a peep. There are alot of good choices in your price range. Go shoot them all, and pick the one that feels most comfortable for you.
IMO you need to start out fresh with your own bow, own sights, own shafts etc. That way that bow is tuned specifically to you, not your uncle, but you. Start out with a PSE, they are great bows for a descent price, yes I use a Mathews but PSE's are great for the price and have many quality bows. Second go with a three pin sight, they are a good start, then practice, practice, practice at varying yardage. Just shooting at 15 yards over and over isn't going to get it done for you, I shoot at 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and everything in between, I continually change it up because you have to train like you fight. That should be a good start for you.
IMO I would get a whole new set up that fits YOU...its great that he's let you use it but you need something of your own. There are plenty of bows out there that are great for the price range that your looking in. Many come as kits with quiver, sight, peep sight and rest included...as far as the peep sight...I don't use one and contrary to what your uncle said...you have a better field of vision in low light conditions without a peep...you can get a larger peep which many archers do for more light...either way it works, its just personal preference. and referring back to what Archie set...have someone critique your form...I did this year and it helped improve my accuracy tenfold! Many archers new to the sport don't follow through and that will throw your shot off continually and you'll get very frustrated. Before you start slinging arrows at game become a better shooter because we all don't want to just injure an animal...we want to kill it as fast as possible! Good luck!
Yea I def don't want to wound a deer and that's why I've been practicing. I thought grouping them well was ok but im not going to go back out until I sight a new fixed sight pin and install a peep sight. Also I will practice from.15-40 yards. I don't want to wound a deer at all im going to try my best this week and next and maybe go back out. Also everyones opinions are great. My uncles just giving me his opinion from his past experiences. He said I can do whatever I want to the bow as long as it comes back in good condition lol. The weight and the sight are set for me cause he doesn't use the bow anymore. I would love to get a pse bow and hook it all up to my specs and im going to try. Ps lol I went out last night with my brothers parker tornado cross bow and I shot at a doe and the bow exploded in my face lol. It didn't hit me but it almost did the limbs are fine but there was two pieces that failed and swung in my face im lucky it didn't hit me.. but happy hunting guys and I will let everyone know what I buy Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk
Yeah, you might want to just stay away from any kind of bows. Just kidding...I would start by getting a new sight and a peep FOR SURE! Cheaper than buying a new bow. And, by putting your own stuff on it, you might like it a lot more. You should start shooting at a little further distances too. Get a sight with at least 3 pins. You'll have a 20,30, and eventually a 40. A lot of guys even have a 50 now. Put a kisser-button on it, a lot of guys dont like them, but one more anchor point is only an advantage. You should start seeing a huge improvement. Good luck to you and whatever you decide.
Buy yourself a new bow. Get one, and have it set up for you. Practice at 10-20-30-40 yards, and have pins for each location. You will naturally shoot any new bow (that is set up for you) better than your uncle's mathews. Don't shoot at an animal until you're consistently hitting a 4 inch area. Practice at all the yardages you think you might take a shot at. If you can't hit a 4 inch circle yet, that's ok, just don't shoot at a deer until you can.
If you can afford it I would definetly buy your own bow. Have the shop set it up just for you. Check out Mission by Mathews. They are made by Mathews just in a lower more affordable price range. I bought the Mission "venture" paid $600 and absolutely love it. The PSE bowmadness is also a great bow in your price range. Good luck and happy hunting.
You say you practice at 15 yards? The five deer you shot at and missed how far away where they? One of the difficult parts of bow hunting is guessing yardage. You should be practicing out to thirty yards anyways and not just shooting but looking at the distance. I try to visualize in blocks of 10 yards. So if I'm shooting at thirty yards I see three blocks of ten yards. I hope this helps.
I have no clue there are two pieces that hold the string and they broke while I shot we are sending it back to parker its a lifetime warranty but im going to not hunt tonight let the deer come in and feel comfortable and practice alot today and tomorrow with the bow im going to get a peep and a new true glow sight prob should I get the 1 fixed pin or the three 15,20,30 fixed pins? x2 Consider a range finder. I lose my grouping around 30 yards but keep at it and try to be as consistent as possible with good form. Keep Practicing! That's what I do and it helps. I am terrible at range estimation, so I am getting a range finder.
Yea all of you are right I do need to practice from a further distance. Also should I practice from the ground or practice in the air? I will not attempt to shoot a deer u til I group the arrows like u said. I don't want to be one of those guys that wound a deer I will practice until I am better for sure Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk
