This is what happens when you hit that big guy in the shoulder. It's only a matter of time.................... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZRzBYuBIc4
Last time I checked deer didn't have body armor. They have shoulder blades and this is what a Rage does. http://www.missouriwhitetails.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=105880#pid1518464
Although I do not preach these heads, being a G5 Montec fan, they are great heads. They do tear a nice entry hole, and open nicely. That is, if you hit the right spot.
Well last time I accidently hit one in the shoulder was in 05 with a muzzy 100 gr, it went in no farther than the rage in OSB lesson learned, dont hit the shoulder at all
This is what happens when a Slick Trick hits a shoulder. I guess shooting through plywood isn't the same as a shoulder.
Actually guys, THIS is what happens when you accidentally hit a deer in the front shoulder with a rage (2 blade to be precise). Blew clean through the other side. No armor, no guessing, just a shot in 20+ mph crosswinds that I didn't compensate enough for, I'd say the deer weighed 200 ish lbs if I were to guess. Cut him up and packed out the meat only so no way to verify. How about we use ACTUAL results, rather than plywood?
Shoulder shot results will also greatly depend on the deer/animal in question. Farm fed deer tend to have much higher bone density than deep woods deer, mule deer, etc that are living solely on browse and have much lower levels of calcium in their diet. I hit an awesome old whitetail buck in 2003 on my g-parents' farm in the shoulder blade and it didn't go in a bit. Then in 2007 with the same head (Wasp Hammer SST) and same set up I went right through the front leg bone of a mature caribou bull. My dad went right through the front shoulder of a 4.5 year old mule deer buck in CO in 2008 with Rage, but stuck in the shoulder of a farm fed deer here at home the same year. In short, there are too many variables to simply blame a broadhead if things go wrong. There are a ton of good broad heads out there.
I had a hunter hunting here with me, this year....who hit a nice buck in the shoulder knuckle (or femur). His penetration consisted of the BH breaking off at the ferrule. Let me tell you.....it doesn't matter which BH is on the business end when this occurs. The hunter I'm speaking of was using a 2-blade COC and shooting +/- 300fps. 1. Shot placement 2. Scary sharp BH's 3. Sufficient energy 4. Proper marriage between bow/arrow (tune)
Hoyt Vectrix 29" 70#, just shy of 500 grain arrows. Not sure on exact KE as I haven't chronoed it, but OT2 estimates it in the high 70s I think. Going off Huntingsons post, this was a blacktail deer. Strictly a browse feeder, but easily the fattest, thickest deer I have ever seen. There was just shy of 3" of fat covering the back and hams. It was insane. I didn't examine the bones to see the density or anything, but it seemed to have the bone structure of a thick big buck.
How many more "I Love/Hate Rage" threads are there going to be??? If you like 'em shoot 'em. If you don't, then don't shoot 'em. If you do your job. (ie: shot placement) Any decent head will do it's job.
