Been thinking about a .22 to do some squirrel hunting (when I was in VA deer hunting....I ate some squirrel meat a guy there cooked up that knocked my socks off).

Anywho....a guy here in NC has one for sale for $250. I've seen photos. It looks awesome.

    NO IDEA what they're worth.

What about the recurve? :D I've thought about throwing some small game heads on and trying it myself. No idea on the question but seems like a lot of money for a .22.

Recurve for squirrels sounds like a lot of wounded squirrels. Just not that interested.

I'd like a .22 for squirrels, (in addition to the Marlin that I have) but I would like a pistol like Ryan just bought.

I'd be willing to bet heavily that one would wound more squirrels with a .22 than a recurve but miss more squirrels with the recurve vs the .22.

Get yourself a good .17 cal and shoot them in the eye at 50 yards. Much better than a .22.

    John speaks the truth!

I had a Savage stainless 17hmr a couple of years ago that I wish I never sold. It was one of the most accurate guns I have ever owned. What a fantastic squirrel gun it was, it was also deadly on groundhogs out to roughly 150ish yards and quiet too compared to my .223 or other ground hog rounds.

.17hmr is the way to go, I have a .17 Marlin that came with a 3x12 bsa scope with bdc. It's an amazing varmint gun.

Show me another rimfire that shoots 1/2 MOA.

I think they go for around $400 new.

I am on the other side of the fence with a .17 for squirrel. I think it is to powerful of a load. I sold my .17 to one of Dubbyas buddies out in Oklahoma a couple years ago.

It is much more expensive to shoot over a .22 as well. I can buy 550 rounds of .22 ammo for the same price as 50 for the .17. No brainer to me.

Plus a Henry lever gun is just sweet.

Depends on which model it is. They have an expensive one and a cheaper one.

I am all for getting back to my squirrel hunting roots. I miss hunting them as often as I used to.

I have a .177 caliber RWS air rifle and have been a one man extermination crew in my yard the last few weeks...

Been tossing their carcasses in the woods, and have a beautiful hawk hanging around the house eating them for me.

I just cannot bring myself to eat them... Only reason I am killing them is that they are destroying our bird feeders and we have a LOT of them. I feel like crap tossing them...

So - how did he cook them? I would much prefer to use them then just kill them for the hawk, really has me feeling bad...

I also have a Ruger 10/22 that I LOVE, have handled the Henry's they are pretty slick.

Check gunbroker for a reasonable range of prices.

I would be interested in hearing this is well. I haven't went squirrel hunting in a lot of years. But in a few years if my little man shows any interest in hunting, we will start with squirrel.

I've only fried mine and ate it with gravy.

But, the guy that cooked the squirrel I ate in VA fried his for a bit, then seasoned it with stuff like you put on cubed steak. Then, he baked it for a while.

    It was awesome.

If you think about what squirrels eat... it has to be lean meat. Wouldn't a deer's diet and a squirrels diet be fairly close to the same?

i have the henry .22 lever and i love it, it has killed many a squirrel. I am pretty accurate with open sights up to about 40 yards sometimes farther

i have also shot a .17 and they are really accurate but i dont thing i could ever replace my Henry it can take a beating as well

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with any Henry rifle. I have shot a couple and held many. They are truly well made and tons of fun to shoot. I hope to pick one up someday.

As far as .22 vs 17HMR, I would say its a matter of personal preference.

Just give that rifle a good once over and let us know the outcome.
