I was on the computer this morning and looked out the window and saw 8 turkeys under the bird feeders. A hen and 7 poults. They had been hanging around lately. While I was trying to snap some pics I saw another hen approach the group from out of the woods. The mama hen with poults instantly went into strut? She remained that way for a minute until she recognized the other hen.

I didn't know hens did this. The other thing I noticed was how vigilant mama hen was while she watched out for her offspring.

    Thought I would share.

Never saw that before. It must be something they do to show dominance. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

So now if I see a strutter I should take a second look. The Warden might not believe me if I tell him the hen I shot was strutting. Cool pics.

By the size of it compared to the other birds in the first pic, im guessing Tom minus his beard. Looks like some red. white and blues mixed in with its head telling me its a Tom! If wrong, No I havent seen that before. pretty cool,, cool! Great pics any way!

I have had hens go into full strut a couple of times in the Spring. Both times they were acting aggressive towards a hen decoy. Cool picture.

I've seen it in domesticated turkeys. You'll also see little poults occasionally try to strut, which is adorable.

I have a hen chicken that trys to crow and a few hens that try to 'breed' the other hens. For them it's all a dominance thing.

It is definitly a hen and her poults. I've been watching them for a few weeks now. Her vigilance is amazing while the poults run about.

I had a hen come in this past spring and I got some video of it in full strut over my hen decoy. My buddy was calling about 30 yards behind me and decided to get up and walk towards me. He didnt know there was a turkey in front of me and that is what spooks it at the end of the video. At least I got a little footage of it!

I raise chickens and turks and it is very common for a hen with a brood to puff up and strut around. It may be to make herself look larger of toshow the others whos the boss.

I have seen it quite a few times but it is rare. It is most definitely a dominance thing. Cool pics Greg !
