Wondering if i could borrow some expertise in bow hunting. My story is, i am long time gun hunter just taking up bow hunting to extend my hunting season and enjoyment. I normally always hunt public land. I just recently picked up 24 acres that seems to have a pretty good deer population. I am including a map below to see if am on the right track. I would appreciate any good advice on where to setup or move my stands and where to hunt. The wind here is usually always a NW wind in the fall unless we get really warm days. The blue lines indicate where i have found deer trails and the circles with the yellow highlight are where i found beds in the tall grass where there aren't any tree's. This land is diverse. about 70% of it is forest and the rest is grassy fields with knee high vegetation. I am also looking for ideas on planting some beans this spring that may attract more deer. I know there are some experts here that could help me. Hoping you can lend me some ideas. I have 2 more stands i can set up as well. The entrance road is to the south.
I would hang a stand on the sw side of the trail in the forest. About 15 yards off the first curve in the trail. Where that tree with the orange top is.
We have a farm across the street to the south which grows a variety of things. To the north i have no idea. The field on my drawing contains long grass and some thorn. I am guessing there is food in there. They bed there as i found about 6 beds in a large circle. Are you guys suggesting the stand placement right here? (depicted with an X)
I think that they would be more calm and relaxed in the forest than they would be next to a wide open area.
gotcha.. thank you.. this makes sense since the wind is usually always from the NW. IT would put me downwind.
I do. It's at the edge of my property. There is a hill at the back and the wetter land is down at the bottom
I would get in there and get a stand sight ready. If any type of South wind comes through I'd hunt where those Topo lines tighten up near that swamp. Find a trail coming out of that wet land onto that hill and I bet you will be in the money. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
That total sense. We did have some south winds this year and warmer temps so i have a few hang on stands that will setup. I want to make sure i have 2 stands for NW wind, and 2 for S winds. I walked that area when i purchased the land. I didn't see many tracks back there (snow on the ground), but the habitat looked perfect for deer. It was under alot of tree cover to where is turned the natural light from the sun green. It was noticibly warmer in temperature as well. I just picked up a few hangon stands on sale for $25 at a local hardware store, and plan to hang them back in there. Thank you again for your help. I am new to bow hunting as i mentioned. Mostly a gun hunter for years and years on public land.
