So I know the majority of people on this forum are from these states Iowa Illinois Wisconsin and hopefully some from Kansas or Missouri. Me and a buddy are wanting to take a trip to some public land in one of these states. I need some advice from you fine ladies and gentlemen on what state would be best, specific management areas, what time of year to go etc.. Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated!
I'm from the north east but I know guys that have been very successful on "walk in land in Kansas". Bow hunting public in the Midwest can be hit or miss but usually not to over pressured until gun seasons begin.
You are looking at three to four years wait to draw a tag in better zones of Iowa. For that reason, I would look to an over the counter state.
Do you want me to shoot the buck for you too? You named the top states that all hunters relate with big bucks, do a little more research than that. My advice would be to pick an area of any whitetail state and spend time scouting it from google and learning the life of deer in that area. Of course some states are better than the rest but there's about 15 states you have a chance of killing a nice buck. Pick an area by the process off elimination, pick the a few spots to hunt, hunt, reassess. You might not get a buck on the first trip, but you'll know that area a little better and decide if you want to try it again.
