I need to know which way to move my rest. At 40 yards my broadheads are shooting about 3-4 inches left of my field points. Do I move the rest toward the direction of my field points or away? I thought I should move it toward the direction of my field points. My field points were right of my broadheads so I move my rest right just a bit, maybe a 1/16 of an inch. The change brought my broadheads closer to the center of my target, but now my field points are shooting about 7 inches right of my broadheads and about 2 inches high. Thoughts/Advice?
You'll move your rest in the opposite direction of where your arrows are hitting when you move your rest.
Like ^^ I was taught to move the rest in the direction of the field tip arrow, very slight adjustments at a time, until hopefully they get close to the same.
Yes, I have done a walk back tune with my bow. However, I only did it with field points. Should I also do a walk back tune with broadheads?
3-4 inches off at 40 yards would be minute adjustments to your rest. A walk back tune with broadheads would be a good idea but so is chasing your arrow since that is what you want to accomplish, broadheads hitting where field tips do. Keep in mind as you move your rest the field tip will move right as well, the thing is though the distance between the two should slowly start to decrease until it's the same. Don't worry about your sights and where the arrows are hitting on the target in this process, just make sure you are aiming at the exact same spot. The smaller the dot you shoot at the better.
Your advice is what I thought, and what I did. But after I made the adjustment by moving my rest in the direction of my field points, (about 1/16 of an inch, maybe a bit less) the distance between my field points and my broadheads increased by like 3 inches. That is why I am so confused. What would you consider a minute adjustment? Was 1/16 of an inch too much or not enough?
If the flight path of the arrow with the broadhead is good (no sidewinder missile effect), I'd just re-sight in for the broadhead. If target practicing with field points during season, just aim accordingly. It's easier to do that in a controlled environment rather than when it's crunch time. I am no expert, but to me, fiddling with the arrow rest makes the arrow come off the bow not centered.
What spine are your arrows? What grain are your broadheads? Do a google search for the easton archery tuning guide. There is a section specifically for what you are asking. It might be easier to see it and able to read it over and over. I keep a copy on my phone.
