Ok, I am planning a diy elk hunt to Colorado and I know nothing. I have been told there are over the counter elk tags but I don't know where in Colorado or how to get them. Thing is it's something I never thought I would be able to afford to do but that is going to change and at 60 years old in Jan. if I'm going I better not wait. So if you can would you please give me some info about how to plan such a trip? Tom
http://www.biggameinfo.com/Elk.aspx this article may help and heres some info on OTC tags http://wildlife.state.co.us/hunting/biggame/Pages/BigGame.aspx
Read all the Elk Univercity stuff on Colorads web site as well. FYI DIY hunts are not the easiest way to bag an elk so think about private land hunts as well.
My best advice is research research research. Also be prepared for two things. 1) high chance of not tagging an elk, so enjoy the amazing experiences you have out there. 2) the return trip. I guarantee you're going to be addicted. Your most likely going to start planning your next trip in the first 5 miles on the journey home. Sent from iPhone
Well I was in the same shoes about three years ago. Now granted I did have a lot more ideas about how to make the next years hunt better and I learned a ton the first year out. Me and my hunting partner have both came home with elk all three years. First year was over the counter second riffle season, followed by a muzzleloader and archery. Best advise is call out speak with DOW they are great at helping with the basic. Once you get to town stop the forest service office or the BLm office they too are great about sharing info. Good Luck
